Health, Safety, Quality and Compliance Apprentice

The Health, Safety, Quality and Compliance Apprentice will support Pearson TQ’s compliance, quality assurance and health and safety activities while developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for a career in this area. The role will work closely with Pearson TQ compliance and health and safety staff member Donna Rowley, with line management responsibility held by Rob Waller.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the maintenance, review and version control of health and safety, quality and compliance documentation, including policies, procedures, forms, trackers and guidance notes.
• Assist with internal audits, compliance checks, inspections and evidence gathering under supervision.
• Help monitor the completion of actions arising from audits, risk assessments, incidents, inspections and improvement plans.
• Support the recording, tracking and reporting of incidents, near misses, hazards and corrective actions.
• Assist with the preparation of health and safety, quality and compliance reports, dashboards, briefings and communications.
• Support risk assessment activity, including document review, action tracking and follow-up with relevant teams.
• Maintain accurate records in line with Pearson TQ procedures, audit requirements and data protection expectations.
• Assist with compliance-related communications, awareness campaigns, toolbox talks, reminders and staff guidance.
• Liaise professionally with colleagues, managers and stakeholders to obtain information, follow up actions and promote good practice.
• Attend apprenticeship training, complete assignments on time and apply learning within the workplace.

Health and Safety Duties

• Support the team in promoting a positive health and safety culture across Pearson TQ.
• Assist with workplace inspections, safety visits and follow-up actions where appropriate.
• Help maintain records relating to first aid, DSE, fire safety, risk assessments, mandatory training and incident reporting.
• Support the review and issue of health and safety communications to staff, learners and stakeholders.
• Develop understanding of relevant UK health and safety legislation and guidance, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated regulations.
• Support Pearson TQ’s quality and compliance processes, including audit preparation, evidence collation and action tracking.
• Assist with monitoring adherence to internal policies, external standards, contractual requirements and regulatory expectations.
• Support the maintenance of compliance trackers, audit schedules, document registers, environmental registers and improvement logs.
• Contribute to continuous improvement activity by identifying trends, reporting gaps and suggesting practical improvements.
• Develop understanding of quality management principles, including ISO 9001, Matrix, governance, document control and evidence-based assurance.

Quality and Compliance Duties

Person Specification

• Interest in health and safety, quality assurance, compliance, risk management and continuous improvement.
• Good attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
• Confident written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally with colleagues and stakeholders.
• Good organisational skills and ability to manage deadlines, training commitments and work priorities.
• Willingness to learn, ask questions and take feedback positively.
• Ability to handle information confidentially and appropriately.
• Basic IT skills, including confidence using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
• A proactive, reliable and collaborative approach to work.

Training and Development

The apprentice will complete an agreed apprenticeship programme and will be supported to develop practical workplace experience alongside formal learning. Development may include health and safety legislation, risk assessment, incident reporting, audit principles, quality management systems, compliance monitoring, stakeholder communication and continuous improvement. The development pathway should also include relevant micro-courses to build practical capability, including DSE Assessor training, fire safety awareness, Environmental awareness, incident reporting, risk assessment awareness, document control and audit evidence gathering. The apprentice will be expected to complete all training requirements, maintain evidence of learning, and apply new skills within the Pearson TQ working environment.

Learning Outcomes and Professional Development Pathway

The apprentice will be supported to develop their health and safety competence through a structured learning pathway. This should include an initial learning outcome aligned to NEBOSH Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety, followed by longer-term progression towards NEBOSH Level 6 in Health and Safety practise, subject to role development, business need, learner readiness and agreed funding approval.

NEBOSH Level 3 learning outcome: Develop a broad foundation in occupational health and safety, including understanding UK health and safety responsibilities, identifying common workplace hazards, carrying out suitable and sufficient risk assessments, recommending proportionate control measures, supporting incident reporting and contributing to a positive health and safety culture.

Application of Level 3 learning in the workplace: Apply learning directly to Pearson TQ activities by supporting risk assessment reviews, workplace inspections, incident and near-miss tracking, compliance communications, action monitoring and evidence gathering.

NEBOSH Level 6 progression outcome: Progress towards advanced health and safety competence, including the ability to interpret and apply health and safety legislation, influence safety culture, assess organisational risk, monitor performance, support strategic improvement and contribute to the effective management of workplace health, safety and wellbeing.

Application of Level 6 learning in practise: Use advanced learning to support more complex health and safety activity, including audit preparation, contractor and supply chain considerations, organisational change, workplace health issues, safety performance monitoring, improvement planning and professional judgement in line with Pearson TQ arrangements.
