
Competitive Sports Coordinator Department of Campus Recreation
Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Assistant Director, responsible for the management of Campus Recreation's competitive sports program including intramurals and club sports for all students, faculty/staff, and other eligible participants. Responsible for assisting with all of Campus Recreation's community programs including a comprehensive 8-week summer camp for local youth. Duties & ResponsibilitiesIntramurals Work closely with the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Community Programs and the Community Programs Coordinator to offer an inclusive, innovative, and accessible Intramural Activities program. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Community Programs, assist with training, developing, evaluating, scheduling, managing, and promoting numerous part-time student staff positions Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Community Programs, assist with planning, developing, scheduling, and maintaining a comprehensive Intramural Program Collaborate with other university and Campus Recreation departments for the successful implementation of new programming effort. Assist with coordination of program outreach efforts and initiate new campus partnerships. Maintain a working knowledge of industry trends and present new initiatives each semester. Disseminate established risk management plans and ensure that they are implemented effectively. Recommend new ideas, sports, and opportunities for the growth of intramural activities Develop, attend and evaluate all sport official’s trainings for intramural activities Assist in the creation of the semester sport calendar, participant rewards, and weekly staff meetings Serve as primary back-up for payroll for all part-time staff within intramural activities.Community Programs Develop, coordinate, manage, and evaluate Campus Recreation’s 8 week summer camp and other community program initiatives. Hire, train, evaluate, promote student community programs staff tasked with organizing and managing all community program offerings. Schedule, plan, and implement reservations for all community program offerings. Assist in the creation of summer camp policies, pricing packages, and employee handbooks. Maintain a working knowledge of industry trends and present new initiatives each summer. Evaluate program satisfaction and needs assessment annually and implement strategies for retention and growth. Assist with planning and implementation of Community Program events during the school year as needed. Support the University of Illinois' commitment to child abuse prevention as a mandatory reporter.Club Sports Assist the Assistant Director as needed to structure an organized and equitable Club Sport program. Work cooperatively with Campus Recreation and Student Engagement staff to assist with the administration of over 40 club sports as needed. Collaborate with multiple different Campus Recreation areas to provide a cohesive club sports practice schedule. Serve as primary back-up for payroll for all part-time staff within club sports.Departmental Duties Manage an annual budget for competitive sports and community programs. Attend state and regional professional development conferences and workshops. Support and engage with NIRSA sport tournaments for yearly professional development Serve on Department, Division and/or University committees as assigned. Manage special projects that support the overall mission of Campus Recreation. Participate as a member of the Campus Recreation professional staff in the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Participate in the development of programs, departmental objectives, and long-range planning by performing research, providing recommendations, and implementing plans as appropriate. Follow University and department cash handling policies and procedures. Enforce and maintain Campus Recreation policies and procedures as they pertain to usage of facilities on campus.
Physical Demands and Working ConditionsWhen working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various physical demands including ability to move, transfer and/or transport items that may occasionally weigh up to twenty-five (25) pounds, and twisting, pushing and pulling movements.
Work Schedule, Travel, or Other Job ExpectationsTo perform the functions of this position, the employee will be required to perform work in an office, outside, or within facilities that are served, and must have the capability to travel from one location to the other in a timely fashion. Position requires flexibility to a variable work schedule due to events and special programming. Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Recreation, Sports and Tourism or related field. One (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in higher education intramural or club sports, and/or summer camps. Preferred QualificationsComprehensive and detailed knowledge of Intramural, club sport, and summer camp programs. Experience leading intramural, club sport, or summer camp programs.Experience supervising intramural staff and summer camp counselors.Experience working with students.Experience training officials’ clinics.Experience with Fusion, Fusion Play, or participant registration software.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesSkill in effective communication. Ability to adjust actions in relation to others' actions. Ability to understand information and presented ideas. Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work. Ability to work effectively with staff, the public, and outside constituency groups. Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of others. Ability to utilize various computer software packages, such as accounting software, query, etc. Ability to work independently to analyze and develop guidelines, procedures and systems. Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 11/8/2026. The budgeted salary for this position is $54,000 - $58,000. This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.
