Job Description

Competency Consultant

At WSP, you’ll find yourself challenged in fascinating and far‑reaching ways. We’re working on iconic projects, solving complex problems, and shaping the future of our cities and communities. And behind all of that is a workforce whose capability, safety and readiness really matters.

We’re looking for a Competency Consultant to take ownership of our enterprise competency, accreditation and credentialing frameworks – helping ensure our people are project‑ready, compliant, and supported to grow their technical capability across Australia.

About the role

Reporting to the Head of Learning and Development, this national role sits within our People Team and is responsible for the end‑to‑end governance, administration and continuous improvement of competency and credential frameworks for technical and project staff.

You’ll play a critical role in ensuring WSP meets legislative, client, safety and professional body requirements, while also enabling workforce mobility, risk management and capability uplift across regions and projects.

This is a role for someone who enjoys structured complexity, values strong governance, and can balance compliance with practical, people‑centred advice.

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you will:

  • Own and maintain enterprise competency and credential frameworks, including Rail Industry Worker (RIW) / Rail Operator requirements, professional registrations (e.g. CPEng, state‑based engineering registration), Site Ready frameworks, and other statutory or client‑mandated credentials
  • Manage end‑to‑end competency administration activities, including applications, renewals, approvals, evidence verification, card issuance, expiry management and audit readiness
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes, assess business impacts, and provide clear, timely advice to leaders, managers and employees
  • Produce regular and ad‑hoc reporting on expiring competencies, new starters, grandfathering and risk‑exposed roles or projects
  • Manage internal competency, progression and assessment frameworks (including PML Level 1–5, technical capability pathways and project‑specific schemes)
  • Coordinate assessments, working with SMEs, assessors and business leaders, and manage training follow‑up, conditional approvals and removals where required
  • Ensure strong governance, evidence management and data integrity across capability systems (including CapDB, Horizon and related platforms)
  • Act as a trusted subject matter expert and advisor to project leaders, Learning & Development, SHEQ, GCC and Project Administration teams
  • Review and improve competency‑related policies, plans, success profiles and tracking tools, driving continuous improvement and risk reduction
  • Contribute to enterprise initiatives such as global framework transitions, Approved Reviewer programs, Project Delivery Excellence and capability uplift activities

About you

You’ll bring a mix of technical rigour, stakeholder confidence and service mindset, along with:

  • Experience in a corporate environment with responsibility for compliance, administration, learning and/or competency management
  • Strong understanding of compliance‑based frameworks, evidence management and audit readiness
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage complex, high‑risk processes with confidence
  • Well‑developed stakeholder management and advisory skills, with the ability to engage at all levels of the organisation
  • Strong analytical and reporting capability, with the ability to identify risks, trends and improvement opportunities
  • A proactive, solution‑focused mindset with demonstrated experience reviewing and improving processes
  • The ability to work autonomously, exercise sound judgement and manage competing priorities

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Administration qualifications
  • AQTF Assess Competency Statement of Attainment
