He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Building Consents department has an opportunity for a Competency Assessor within our Capability Team, to c oach, mentor, and train our technical staff so they can deliver consistent, high‑quality building control services across Tāmaki Makaurau.
As part of the Capability team, you’ll help strengthen the technical development of our people, support BCA accreditation, and uphold the standards of building consent and Certification processes for both internal teams and external stakeholders. Working closely with the Team Leader Assessment, you’ll support the implementation of the National Competency Assessment System (NCAS), assess technical competence, and identify training needs that help staff grow and succeed.

This role requires experience in similar building control or technical assessment roles, with a sound understanding of building legislation, competency frameworks, and the practical nuances of working within a BCA environment.
You’ll be personable, approachable, and genuinely enjoy working with people. Confident in coaching and mentoring, you’ll bring experience in one‑on‑one development as well as classroom or group training, helping lift capability across the department.
Your strong communication and negotiation skills will enable you to engage effectively with external BCAs, senior leaders, managers, and a wide range of stakeholders.
Analytical and organised, you’ll be confident evaluating competency evidence, conducting interviews, and producing clear, well‑reasoned reports. You’ll be process‑driven and able to make sound, critical decisions, applying judgement that aligns with best industry practice. Your understanding of accreditation requirements, compliance standards, and quality assurance principles will help drive consistency and continuous improvement across the BCA.
You’ll also bring initiative and innovative thinking, contributing to policy research, supporting case reviews, and helping refine practices and systems. Your ability to look ahead, identify opportunities, and strengthen how we work will play an important role in building capability and supporting ongoing improvement across the organisation.

This role has a remuneration range of $108,000 – $120,000 (based on skillset and experience )
Our employer Kiwisaver contribution is additional to base salary offered.
