Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a democratic process where community members decide how to spend part of a public budget. Boston’s PB process, Ideas in Action, is a yearly initiative where residents unite in open dialogue about budget priorities, identify and prioritize project ideas, and take collective action to decide which projects get to be funded and implemented for the benefit of our communities.

The Office of Participatory Budgeting (OPB) seeks a Community Partnerships and Project Coordinator to manage the Office’s outreach and partnership initiatives. This new role will oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of engagement strategies across the various PB phases; coordinate logistics for events and workshops; manage relationships with diverse stakeholders; and support tracking the implementation of winning PB projects. The Coordinator will work closely with OPB staff to ensure that residents from all neighborhoods have the opportunity to take part in Ideas in Action.

Responsibilities

• Identify, recommend, and incorporate improvements to the Office’s community engagement and partnerships model.
• Plan and manage community engagement initiatives for the various phases of the PB process (Idea Collection, Proposal Development, Voting) — keeping track of timelines, resource allocation, and milestones.
• Serve as primary liaison and project lead for the Office’s community partners, managing the full partnership lifecycle from recruitment, training, ongoing support, and evaluation.
• Manage stakeholders relationships — including residents and community leaders, nonprofits, civic groups, contractors, and City staff; maintain organized records of interactions and build strategic partnership networks.
• Lead and oversee logistics of community events, including but not limited to coordination with community partners, contractors, volunteers, and relevant City Departments.
• In collaboration with relevant City departments, track the implementation of funded participatory budgeting projects, posting updates to the website, and sharing relevant information with the public and other stakeholders.
• Create outreach materials such as flyers, newsletters, and email campaigns, ensuring language and other accessibility considerations for our diverse residents.
• Attend community meetings, forums, and City events to engage with residents, organizations, and stakeholders to represent OPB.
• Provide ongoing program support and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred, plus two (2) years of project management, community engagement, community organizing, or outreach experience.
• Demonstrated project management expertise with proven ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives with competing deadlines.
• Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills; ability to develop and conduct presentations and training sessions.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and build consensus around contentious issues or diverse perspectives.
• Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Haitian Creole (or other City of Boston threshold languages) is strongly preferred due to the high volume of community engagement in these languages.
• Ability to respond to inquiries from community members and stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.
• Proficiency in Google Suite, content creation/editing programs (Canva Design, Adobe Design, etc.), and social media management tools (Meta, Instagram, Twitter X).
• Strong interest in community development and civic participation.
• Ability to take initiative and work independently with little direction, as well as part of a team.
• Flexibility to occasionally work evenings and weekends for community events.
