ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Community Organizer plays a key role in expanding access to Girl Scouts by leading community-based recruitment efforts, particularly in diverse and historically underserved communities. This role combines outreach, event coordination, partnership building, and follow-up to help girls and families connect to programs and opportunities.
This position is highly visible and community-facing and requires flexibility. The schedule includes evenings and weekends, as well as regular local travel to schools, community events, and partner locations throughout the service area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Community Recruitment and Outreach
- Plan and execute recruitment strategies using local data and community insight
- Represent Girl Scouts River Valleys at schools, libraries, community events, and resource fairs
- Coordinate logistics for recruitment events, including scheduling, materials, and follow-up
- Use a variety of outreach methods, including events, flyers, social media, and word-of-mouth
- Clearly explain participation options and support families through the joining process
Volunteer and Community Partnerships
- Build and maintain strong relationships with schools and community organizations
- Support volunteer leaders with guidance, resources, and recruitment tools
- Serve as a connector between volunteers, families, and the council
Group Formation and Placement
- Facilitate placement of girls and volunteers into groups, including forming new groups when needed
- Provide customer support via phone, email, and in-person interactions
- Track outreach, recruitment, and placement activity accurately in internal systems
Team and Organizational Responsibilities
- Collaborate with colleagues across departments and with other councils as needed
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and in-service opportunities
- Represent the organization professionally in all internal and external settings
- Support the council’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism
- Demonstrate cultural competency and a commitment to equitable practices
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Two or more years of experience in community outreach or a related field
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends
- Ability and willingness to travel locally throughout the council service area
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse environment and support an anti-racist culture
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in a nonprofit, youth-serving, or community-based organization
- Experience working with volunteers
- Background in outreach, recruiting, sales, retail, or public relations
- Experience using data or systems to track outreach activity
- Ability to speak Spanish, Hmong, and or Somali
WORKING CONDITIONS
This role works across office settings and community locations throughout southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The position requires standing, walking, computer use, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Noise levels and environments may vary.
