Our Work In Sierra Leone:

PartnersInHealth (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.

The Community Health Officer (CHO) will serve as a frontline primary healthcare provider within the Peripheral Health Unit (PHU), delivering safe, evidence-based care to neonates, children, and adults. He/she will work under the supervision of Wellbody Clinical Lead and follow established National Clinical Guideline protocols to assess, stabilize, and manage patients across all age groups.

The role aims to ensure continuous primary healthcare delivery, early recognition of complications, appropriate escalation of care, and strict adherence to infection prevention and clinical safety standards. The CHO will also contribute to accurate documentation and data management, including the use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, to strengthen service delivery and improve patient outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Clinical care – Provide comprehensive healthcare services to neonates, children, and adults, including preventive, curative, and emergency care within the PHU setting, in line with National Clinical Guideline standards.
• Clinical documentation and data – Ensure accurate and timely recording of patient encounters, treatment plans, and outcomes, utilizing both manual records and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
• Escalation of care – Identify cases requiring advanced medical intervention and promptly refer patients to higher-level facilities, ensuring effective communication and follow-up.
• Procedural skills – Perform essential clinical procedures safely and effectively, including neonatal resuscitation, wound management, and basic emergency interventions for all age groups.
• Infection prevention and control – Implement and monitor infection control measures to protect patients, staff, and the wider community, adhering to national and international standards.

Clinical Skills

• Primary healthcare delivery – Experience in maternal and child health, immunization, malaria prevention, HIV/TB and comprehensive treatment for all age groups.
• Adult patient care – Proficiency in diagnosing and treating common adult illnesses, managing chronic conditions, and providing preventive health services.
• Neonatal assessment – Ability to conduct thorough evaluations of newborns to identify normal development and detect early signs of complications.
• Infection prevention – Strong knowledge and practice of infection control measures to safeguard Children, Adults, and healthcare staff.
• Emergency response – Ability to deliver urgent care for both adults and children, including stabilization and referral when necessary.

Professional Skills.

• Team collaboration – Ability to work effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and community stakeholders to deliver coordinated health services.
• Accurate documentation – Skilled in maintaining precise patient records and program reports, including proficiency in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
• Good communication skills – Strong interpersonal skills to engage patients, families, and communities with clarity and empathy, promoting health education and adherence to treatment.
• Ethical patient care – Commitment to professional standards, confidentiality, and equitable access to healthcare services.
• Community outreach – Experience conducting health education, awareness campaigns, and preventive care initiatives within local communities.
• Primary healthcare delivery – Competence in providing essential services such as maternal and child health, immunization, malaria prevention, and treatment of common illnesses.
• Supervision and mentoring – Ability to support junior staff and community health workers to strengthen service delivery and build capacity.

Education and Work Experience Requirements

• A Diploma or Degree in Community Health and Clinical Services.
• A Valid professional registration with the relevant regulatory body.

• Additional training in: Newborn care, ETAT, and Infection prevention and control
