PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Hiring Salary for this position is $58,487 - $73,108 annually.

The Community Engagement Coordinator will support the Aurora Police Department’s Community Relations Section (CRS) in the areas of: program management, community education, and resource development. This position reports to the Community Relations Section Manager.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
In collaboration with the CRS Manager and other staff, establish community engagement goals and objectives related to programming, community education, and resource development.
Create, plan, and manage community outreach initiatives/special events (Community Police Academy, Faith & Blue Weekend, holiday outreach, etc.).
Establish and build partnerships with organizations (businesses, nonprofits, schools) throughout the community.
Represent the organization at events, community meetings, and networking opportunities.
Initiate, support, and/or collaborate with staff, volunteers, and outside partners on emerging needs within the community.
Creatively engage with community members, businesses, and partner agencies to educate stakeholder groups of APD’s programs and support services.
Support and collaborate with CRS units as needed to increase stakeholder participation, educate the community of available programs/services, and build relationships to advance the mission of CRS.
Serve as an APD liaison for city-sponsored committees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
A bachelor’s degree in education, social services, nonprofit management or related field
Experience:
Minimum three years’ experience in project management, community outreach, or program development.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
Valid driver’s license and insurance
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
The principles and practices of neighborhood outreach, program development, public administration, and local government structure and services
Best practices related to community engagement through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Small group facilitation, community leadership development
Strong collaboration skills with the ability to engage both community members and City staff/Council
Personal computer with related software, including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications
Skills in:
Strong interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and public presentation skills
Abilities:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management, including executive staff, community members, and elected officials.
Develop and maintain effective interpersonal relations with diverse socioeconomic and multi-cultural groups
Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
Effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Work within budgets for outreach initiatives/special events.
Analyze and compile technical information and reports
Interpret and apply applicable laws, ordinances, and policies
Ability to work and/or attend meetings on evenings and weekends.
Creatively solve problems, negotiate, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Essential Personnel:
When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at a time. Frequency level: continuous - occurs more than 5.6 hours per shift and includes, but not limited to:
sitting, standing, bending, stooping, walking
repetitive hand motion (such as typing)
hearing, listening, seeing, talking, reading
lifting up to 50 pounds
Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computer terminal and other office equipment
Vision for reading, preparing, and interpreting reports and data analysis
Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and community members.
Work Environment:
Works primarily indoors but may work outdoors assisting with a program or outreach events in varying weather conditions.
Working at a computer for long periods of time.
Receiving and responding to numerous phone calls, text messages, and emails daily.
Use of personal vehicle for local travel outside of the office (less than 25% of the time).
Participating in public gatherings for extended periods of time.
Speaking and appearing publicly on behalf of the organization.
Moving materials/supplies to and from events.
Equipment Used:
Uses standard office equipment, including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel, and menu-driven databases.
This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
