New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) is a coordinating agency for the City of New York. The agency plans and prepares for emergencies, educates the public about preparedness, coordinates emergency response and recovery, and collects and disseminates emergency information. The agency maintains a disciplined unit of emergency management personnel including but not limited to attorneys, responders, planners, watch commanders, logisticians, community outreach, communications, administrative and support staff to identify and respond to various hazards.
The Community Engagement division helps communities become more resilient by providing guidance for community emergency planning for the most common hazards in New York City and connecting established community organizations and networks to the Emergency Operations Center. Through outreach and training, the Community Preparedness Bureau brings together leaders from volunteer programs, community and nonprofit organizations, and government to promote preparedness at the local level.
of Project/ Intern Responsibilities:
The summer intern for New York City Emergency Management’s Community Engagement Bureau will support public facing preparedness initiatives across the five boroughs. The role offers hands on experience in community engagement, emergency preparedness education, and interagency collaboration within a fast-paced environment.
Examples of projects that the intern may be asked to complete include:
- Assisting with logistical and distribution of printed and promotional materials for a variety of summer events.
- Assist and lead presentations to a variety of stakeholders including community-based organizations, community boards, and other audiences on topics such as heat, coastal storm, flooding, and general preparedness.
- Assist in developing and implementing a Stop the Bleed program.
- Attend tabling events across the five boroughs with NYCEM staff.
- Assist in maintaining and updating various contact lists.
- Attend and support various trainings including CERT training events.
- Other data entry, tracking, and analysis as needed.

The selected candidate will be required to provide a letter of support from their high school administration and/or a letter confirming matriculation with an accredited college/university. Further letters will be required for each semester (spring, summer, fall) the candidate is working at NYCEM as an intern.

For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
