This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) position. Pursuant to the City & County of San Francisco Charter, Section 10.104.18, this position shall be exempt from competitive civil service selection, appointment and removal procedures. Job Description

The Community Engagement Fellow will work with the San Francisco Economic Justice Center (EJC), housed within the Office of the Treasurer & Tax Collector. Reporting to EJC’s Community Engagement Specialist, the Community Engagement Fellow will support community outreach, engagement, and communications broadly for the EJC. This Fall, they will focus on two of EJC’s key initiatives: StopScams SF, the nation’s first comprehensive, city-led strategy to protect residents from financial scams, and Kindergarten to College (K2C), the first publicly funded universal children’s savings program of its kind in the country. The Community Engagement Fellow will help plan and staff outreach events, develop community-facing materials, and build relationships with community partners, schools, and residents across San Francisco. This is a temporary, part-time position, up to 20 hours per week, through June 2027, with possibility to extend pending additional funding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential duties of the position include but are not limited to:

Community Outreach & Event Support (40%)

• Support the planning and execution of tabling, presentations, workshops, and community listening sessions for EJC programs, including at community organizations, schools, and other institutions in community.
• Represent EJC at community events and public forums under the guidance of the Community Engagement Specialist; bring back learnings to inform program work.
• Assist with staffing StopScams SF community listening sessions and K2C school-based events, including some evening and weekend outreach.

Communications & Materials Development (35%)

• Support development and distribution of outreach materials — flyers, social media content, newsletters, presentations, and website content — for EJC programs, including StopScams SF and K2C.
• Help collect, organize, and incorporate community testimonials, stories, and feedback gathered from outreach activities.
• Support tracking of emerging scam trends for use in community-facing communications and alerts.

Administrative & Program Support (25%)

• Assist with data entry, tracking outreach metrics, and maintaining partner and contact lists for EJC programs.
• Support scheduling, meeting notes, and logistics for outreach events and community listening sessions.
• Provide general administrative and project support to the Community Engagement Specialist and EJC team as assigned.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in, or has completed, coursework toward a degree (undergraduate or graduate) from an accredited college or university in public policy, communications, social work, education, ethnic studies, economics, or a related field; OR
• Equivalent experience conducting community outreach, engagement, or organizing work may substitute for the above on a year-for-year basis.
• Availability to work up to 20 hours per week, including some evening and weekend outreach events.

Desirable Qualifications:

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

• Interest in, or lived experience with, economic justice, consumer protection/fraud prevention, or youth and college savings issues.
• Experience or comfort engaging with community members, tabling at events, or public speaking.
• Familiarity with, or experience working in, one or more of San Francisco’s priority communities: Bayview Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley, Excelsior, South of Market, Tenderloin, Chinatown, Treasure Island, and the Mission.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible language for the public.
• Experience with social media, flyer/newsletter design, or other communications tools.
• Bilingual or multilingual ability a plus (e.g., Spanish, Cantonese, or other languages spoken in SF’s priority communities).
• Detail-oriented, reliable, and able to manage multiple outreach activities at once.
• Ability and willingness to travel locally to attend outreach and community events, and to lift up to 20 lbs. of event materials.
