Job Description

The University of Pikeville is seeking an energetic and dependable Assistant Instructor to support the School of Dance program. This position works alongside lead instructors to provide a positive, structured, and encouraging studio environment for students across a variety of age groups and skill levels.

The Assistant Instructor will help with classroom management, technique demonstrations, student engagement, rehearsals, and general studio operations. A foundational background in ballet is required. Additional training in jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, and/or tap is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist lead instructors with warm-ups, technical exercises, choreography, and other classroom activities.
  • Support instruction in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, tap, and other dance styles based on experience and program needs.
  • Demonstrate dance techniques and movements accurately and appropriately for students.
  • Provide individual assistance and support to students as needed.
  • Help maintain student focus, classroom organization, and a safe studio environment.
  • Assist with classroom transitions, attendance, and preparation of studio spaces.
  • Help coordinate costumes, props, and other materials used for classes and performances.
  • Assist with rehearsals, recitals, performances, and other School of Dance activities.
  • Encourage students and help create a welcoming and positive learning environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Formal dance training with foundational skills and technique in at least two dance genres, including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, and/or tap.
  • Foundational training in ballet is required.
  • Previous experience working with children or youth is preferred.
  • Previous teaching, assistant teaching, or dance studio experience is preferred but not required.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to accurately demonstrate dance movements and techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively with students of different ages and skill levels.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Energetic, creative, dependable, and engaging.
  • Ability to take direction and work collaboratively with lead instructors and School of Dance staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to student safety.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude.
  • Must be punctual and reliable.
  • Ability and willingness to work primarily during late afternoon and early evening hours.
