The purpose of this class within the organization is to maintain and repair The City’s fiber optic communications and associated systems. This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires one year in electrical, mechanical or communications maintenance or closely related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required, or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of practices, methods, and tools of the maintenance, electrical, and communications trade.
- Some knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions in electrical and various mechanical trades.
- Ability to do strenuous manual work under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assists technicians in performing daily work including maintenance, testing, installation and operation of fiber optic communications systems.
- Performs traffic signal troubleshooting and maintenance, AMI infrastructure maintenance and installation.
- Identifies and accurately labels fiber optic cables, patch panels and enclosures.
- Assists in restoring power to the electric distribution system during storms and outages.
- Sets up work zones and follows all established safety procedures.
- Makes minor repairs to electrical equipment, wiring and fixtures.
- Works in close proximity to voltages up to 100KV by following required safety procedures.
- Operates maintenance equipment, excavators, forklifts, and bucket trucks.
- Completes electric underground locates.
- Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
