The Responsibilities of the Communications Technician:
Under general supervision, performs the installation, maintenance and repairs of data and voice communications systems and equipment in the assigned region and statewide. Provides initial support to computer issues of end users in the assigned region and statewide.
  • Performs the installation, maintenance, and repairs for data and voice communications systems and equipment to include dispatch communications systems, region and unit office radios, VoIP and telephone systems such as mobile radios, automatic vehicle location devices, portable radios, cellphones, and other personal mobile devices.
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, repair and end user support of computer related equipment, software, and network equipment. Serves as the region primary contact for computer issues; numerous Wi-Fi and LAN links; and various sensors throughout the agency.
  • Ensures compliance with Federal and agency regulations on all communication equipment owned by the S.C. Forestry Commission. Conducts end user training in a group or one-on-one setting. Performs computer and communication support functions in other areas of the agency as assigned.
  • Serves as initial point of contact for communication sites, dispatch generators and cooling systems. Performs initial diagnosis of generator/cooling issues and works with vendor to complete repairs. Maintains interior, or agency owned, repeater enclosures. Reports facility issues to appropriate agency staff for resolution.
  • Perform other duties as required in support of the agency's mission and strategic goals.

Examples of duties

  • A high school diploma and two (2) years journey-level work experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic communications equipment, in telecommunications or computer operations. (An associate's degree in a technical communications discipline may be substituted for the required experience.)
  • Criminal background and drug test are required.
  • Requires a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Experience programming and troubleshooting VHF, UHF, and 7/800Mhz devices. Knowledge of APCO P25 technologies, DMR, NXDN systems.

Supplemental information

  • Normal work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm. Required to work some holidays and weekends. Occasional statewide, overnight, and out-of-state travel; able to respond to emergency calls 24/7.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds; position requires physical activities to include considerable use of arms, legs, and wide range of body motions, climbing, lifting, maintaining balance, walking, stooping.
  • Must be a resident of South Carolina and must live in their area of responsibility or within a radius of 30 miles of their assigned work center.
  • This position is designated as safety sensitive and essential. Position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace- Policy and Procedure.
