Communications Coordinator, Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy


The communications coordinator supports the strategic communication and marketing efforts of the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy by assisting in the development, coordination, and dissemination of internal and external communications. The role involves creating and distributing a wide range of content, including newsletters, press releases, website updates, and social media to engage internal and external audiences. This position ensures consistent messaging, brand alignment, and timely delivery of content across various platforms. The communications coordinator works collaboratively with communications professionals, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners to help promote events, programs and achievements through marketing, storytelling and campaign support.

Nature of Work: Located across two campuses – the University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan, the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) equips professionals to think strategically, work collaboratively, and mobilize change in Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments, non-profits, and co-operatives. The communications coordinator will work closely with the leadership team, staff, and faculty across both campuses and with staff in relevant central offices, to advance the communications priorities of the school. The position reports to the manager, college communications and marketing and is part of a larger team of embedded college communicators.

The coordinator will be a highly motivated and creative individual who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced, relationship-based environment and is able to establish and foster relationships with external stakeholders and service providers. Sound judgment and discretionary decision making is required. The work requires a proactive and strategic approach in a complex environment and the ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences. Establishing and maintaining positive relationships is essential to success. Flexibility will be required occasionally for work outside of normal operating hours and travel within Saskatchewan is required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports the development and execution of integrated communications and marketing plans aligned with school’s priorities.
  • Drafts, edits, and distributes content to support communications and marketing plans, such as newsletters, press releases, website updates, social media, Policy Briefs, and internal and external communications.
  • Coordinates the production and scheduling of social media posts and monitors engagement metrics.
  • Supports the promotion of events and public lectures as needed, including creating and disseminating event posters, social media assets, and emails to intended audience groups.
  • Coordinates with external vendors to ensure supply of print and branded promotional materials including merchandise ensuring all materials align with the school’s brand identity.
  • Executes campaigns and storytelling initiatives that highlight student success, faculty achievements, and institutional milestones.
  • Gathers information, develops assets, and promotes events, programs, and services in collaboration with stakeholders across campus.
  • Tracks media coverage and compiles regular reports on communication efforts and outcomes.
  • Manages photo and video assets, including organizing archives and coordinating shoots.
  • Adheres to branding and style guidelines for JSGS in all communications. Serves as steward of the visual identity standards for JSGS and its reporting centres.
  • Supports stakeholder engagement and outreach activities of the school, to enhance reputational strategies and goals.
  • Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
  • Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement.
  • Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in communications, marketing, or public relations.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and content management systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven knowledge of marketing and communications best practices and ethics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think creatively.
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Cultural awareness and professionalism in all communications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and communications software tools such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to travel occasionally and work outside regular hours as required.
