About NAAFLS

The North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service (NAAFLS) is a not-for-profit organisation delivering holistic legal and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence. With offices across the Top End, our work is grounded in cultural respect, community collaboration, and self-determination.

About the Role

Reporting to the Communications Officer, the Communications Assistant provides administrative and operational support to the delivery of communications and engagement activities across the organisation. This is a hands-on role supporting content creation, digital platforms, and communication initiatives. You will work collaboratively across teams to ensure communications are timely, accurate, and aligned with NAAFLS’ values, helping to promote our services, advocacy work, and community engagement in a culturally respectful and strengths-based way.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of communications and engagement activities across the organisation
  • Assist in developing and publishing content across social media, website, newsletters, and internal communications
  • Assist with drafting, editing, and coordinating communications materials
  • Update and maintain website content using WordPress
  • Monitor social media platforms and escalate issues where required
  • Coordinate communications-related resources and assets (e.g. business cards, banners)
  • Maintain organised digital content libraries and assist with image preparation
  • Collaborate with internal teams and stakeholders to support campaigns and initiatives

About You

Essential:

  • Demonstrated experience in communications, media, or community engagement
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • High attention to detail, including branding and visual consistency
  • Ability to develop content for different audiences and platforms
  • Basic understanding of social media and digital communication tools
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take direction
  • Commitment to representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices

Desirable:

  • Experience in a communications, marketing, or community service role
  • Experience with WordPress, Canva, or social media scheduling tools
  • Experience with Adobe software (Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Relevant qualifications in Communications, Marketing, or Media

North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service (NAAFLS) is a non-government Aboriginal organisation offering legal services and support to victims of family violence and sexual assault.

The primary focus of NAAFLS is to provide culturally appropriate assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children who are victims of domestic and family violence, including sexual abuse. NAAFLS works in accordance to the Family Violence Prevention Legal Services “Operational Framework”.

Services available to clients include:

• Legal advice and casework assistance in areas relating to domestic and family violence, care and protection of children, victims of crime compensation, family law, wills, superannuation, housing and debt management.

• Information support and referral services.

• Community legal education.

• Prevention of family violence initiatives.

• Law reform.
