About Our Opportunity

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Communications Clerk to support our day-to-day communications work. This entry-level role is a great opportunity to build practical experience in public sector communications while contributing to work that impacts Nova Scotians.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, you will be part of a collaborative, close-knit team responsible for both proactive and responsive public-facing communications. You’ll gain hands-on experience in areas such as media monitoring, social media, and event coordination, while supporting efforts to keep the public informed and engaged.

Primary Accountabilities

Media & Social Media Monitoring
  • Monitor daily media coverage (print, online, broadcast) and social media channels for relevant mentions
  • Compile and share daily media summaries and urgent issue alerts
  • Track emerging trends, issues, and public sentiment related to education and early childhood development
Social Media Support
  • Assist in planning and scheduling content across departmental social media platforms
  • Draft posts aligned with departmental priorities and campaigns
  • Monitor engagement and respond to comments or inquiries as directed
  • Support basic analytics tracking and performance reporting
Event Support
  • Assist with planning and coordination of key departmental events (e.g., back-to-school, Education Week, announcements)
  • Prepare materials such as briefing notes, social media content, and event logistics lists
  • Support on-site or virtual event delivery, as needed
General Support
  • Provide administrative and communications support to the team
  • Assist with updating content on internal and external platforms
  • Support records management and organization of communications materials
  • Perform other related duties, as required

Qualifications and Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of training and experience)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good attention to detail and ability to summarize information clearly
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Sound judgment and ability to handle sensitive or confidential information
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn)


Assets include:

  • Co-op, internship, or entry-level experience in communications, media, or public relations
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn) in a professional or organizational context
  • Basic understanding of government communications
  • Experience with analytics tools (e.g., built-in social media insights)
  • Experience with media monitoring tools or content scheduling platforms
  • Bilingualism in French
  • Interest in public education and government priorities

Working Conditions

  • Normal work week is 35 hours per week, 7 hours per day.
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment.
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.
  • Will regularly work on sensitive and confidential issues.

Additional Information

This is a TERM employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of December 24, 2027. The appointment status (‘term’, ‘temporary’ or ‘casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade:EC 05

Salary Range:$2,068.01 - $2,585.02 Bi-Weekly
