What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The Communications Field Officer is the focal point for selected public communication and prevention activities and programs, and in support to Communication officers in the field. helps position the delegation by strengthening its public positioning and visibility, external networking with media and influencers and contributes to setting and implementing priorities, objectives and strategies.

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

• Under the general direction of the delegation’s Communication Coordinator, who sets the department’s overall objectives and the resources available, the employee is the focal point for operational communication, public communication, and Community Engagement (CE) activities in the areas where the ICRC works or intends to initiate operations.
• Contributes to the elaboration and implementation of communication plans.
• Maintains contacts with target audiences such as communities, community leaders, civil society representatives and the authorities to take into account their perceptions in fostering the ICRC’s ability to provide assistance and protection to those affected by violence.
• Reports directly to the Khartoum management with Communication Coordinator as a blue line.
• Contributes to the production of operational communication materials.
• Contributes to the drafting and budget planning
• Is based in Khartoum but works closely with ICRC staff in the field to ensure the implementation of operational communication and CE activities.

Desired profile and skills

• Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
• Able to work under pressure in a potentially dangerous environment

Certifications / Education required

• University degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as communications, political science, international relations or journalism.
• Fluent spoken and written English and/or French and, when applicable, the local language(s).
• Computer skills (proficiency in MS Office); familiarity with digital communication tools.

Professional experience required

• Minimum 3 years’ work experience in a field relevant to communication and/or prevention (preferably with the ICRC).
• Experience in an ICRC operation an asset.
• IHL knowledge an asset.
• Sound knowledge of the political, social and media environment in the country/region covered.
