Commissioning Tuning Engineer

Role Overview

The Commissioning Tuning Engineer applies advanced controls engineering expertise to the startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and optimization of Mitsubishi gas turbines. This role requires demonstrated experience in gas turbine controls and/or combustion tuning, with a strong understanding of turbine control systems and combustion dynamics. The engineer supports commissioning activities by diagnosing technical issues, optimizing turbine performance and reliability, and ensuring equipment operates safely and in accordance with required operational specifications.

Key Responsibilities

• Demonstrates our core competencies: Action oriented, change champion, customer-focused, developing self & others, and ownership
• Support gas turbine commissioning and startup, including operational verification, controls troubleshooting, and system readiness activities.
• Independently perform combustion tuning on Mitsubishi J-Class gas turbines, including load overshoot mitigation, Fuel Gas Temperature (FGT) tuning, ignition tuning, and other advanced tuning procedures.
• Apply expertise in combustion dynamics to diagnose and resolve combustion instabilities, pressure fluctuations, and other dynamic performance issues.
• Utilize combustion tuning and diagnostic tools, including VB tuning programs and the Combustion Adjustment Support System (CASS), for data acquisition, analysis, and tuning adjustments.
• Verify gas turbine control system functionality, including slot assignments, signal outputs, transmitters, failsafe logic, control loops, HMI displays, and overall system readiness.
• Develop, implement, and troubleshoot DCS logic to support commissioning, controls operation, and combustion tuning activities.
• Perform instrument loop checks, calculate operational setpoints, and validate control logic against system specifications and performance requirements.
• Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for technical and operational issues encountered during startup and commissioning.
• Prepare accurate and timely technical reports documenting site conditions, actions taken, tuning results, and recommendations for performance improvement.
• Complete required internal and customer-facing documentation associated with commissioning and combustion tuning activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited four-year institution with 3+ years of relevant experience; or 5+ years of related experience/training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong knowledge of combustion tuning processes and theory, with the technical understanding required to support gas turbine commissioning and tuning activities.
• Strong analytical and technical interpretation skills, with the ability to read, analyze, and understand engineering documents, procedures, and technical requirements.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to internal teams, customers, and stakeholders.
• Proficiency in technical documentation, including preparation of reports, business correspondence, and technical procedures or manuals.
• Proficiency with standard business and technical software, including databases, project management tools, spreadsheets, and word-processing applications.
• Ability and willingness to travel up to 70%, including domestic and international assignments by land and/or air for extended durations.
