The Commissioning Engineer I supports the Commissioning team in the planning, coordination, execution, and delivery of commissioning and energy-related construction projects. This role assists with project documentation, scheduling, field coordination, testing activities, reporting, and client communication to help ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with project requirements and quality standards. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.

Core Requirements

  • Support commissioning activities for MEP and DER projects from design through project turnover and closeout.
  • Assist with development and implementation of commissioning plans, project schedules, and testing procedures.
  • Review construction documents, equipment submittals, and sequences of operation for completeness and coordination.
  • Participate in field inspections, equipment startup observations, and functional performance testing activities.
  • Prepare and maintain commissioning documentation including pre-functional checklists, functional test scripts, issues logs, and reports.
  • Track project issues, action items, and testing deficiencies and coordinate follow-up activities with project teams.
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, controls vendors, and clients to support project execution and system performance objectives.
  • Support project reporting, meeting documentation, and communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support Existing Building Commissioning investigations when needed to improve operation of existing HVAC installations.
  • Assist with post-installation system performance reviews and measurement & verification activities as needed.

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, architecture, or related technical field preferred; equivalent technical training or 4+ years of relevant hands-on building systems experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of experience with commissioning, building controls systems, facilities engineering, or test and balance, or related field.
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, building automation, and lighting control systems.
  • Familiarity with construction documents, technical specifications, and commissioning processes.
  • Ability to support troubleshooting and problem-solving activities related to MEP system performance.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and project documentation platforms.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across project teams.
  • Prior experience with commissioning, ESCO projects, controls systems, TAB, or energy-related projects is a plus.
  • Interest in obtaining commissioning or related industry certifications preferred.
  • Travel is a required component of this role and will be necessary to meet job responsibilities.
