Job Category: EngineeringNorthland Control Systems is seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer based in Letchworth to support the successful delivery of integrated electronic security projects throughout the UK and internationally. This role is ideal for a hands-on security systems professional who enjoys technical problem-solving, working directly with clients, and leading the final stages of project delivery.
As a Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and turning over integrated security systems to clients. You will work closely with Project Managers, Application Engineers, installation teams, clients, and local service partners to ensure systems are delivered in accordance with approved designs, client standards, manufacturer specifications, and Northland best practices.
This position offers the opportunity to work on complex enterprise security projects involving access control, video management, and IP-based security technologies in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
What You'll Do
- Commissioning & System Validation
- Perform commissioning, integrated testing, troubleshooting, and final acceptance testing of access control, video management, and other electronic security systems.
- Validate system functionality, installation quality, and configuration against approved designs, client requirements, manufacturer specifications, and Northland standards.
- Review security system designs, drawings, and specifications prior to installation, identifying technical or compatibility issues and recommending solutions.
- Support field modifications and commissioning activities required to meet project and operational requirements.
- Conduct final inspections and ensure deficiencies are documented and resolved before project handover.
- Technical Leadership & Troubleshooting
- Lead technical troubleshooting efforts and coordinate issue resolution with internal teams, client IT departments, vendors, and local service partners.
- Support Application Engineers with programming validation, testing documentation, and system verification activities.
- Assist with factory acceptance testing, pre-build activities, and quality inspections when required.
- Provide technical guidance to onsite technicians and subcontractors to ensure work is completed safely and in accordance with project requirements.
- Project Coordination & Documentation
- Partner with Project Managers, installation teams, clients, and vendors to ensure project milestones are achieved and schedules are maintained.
- Communicate project progress, technical risks, issues, and resolutions to internal and external stakeholders.
- Complete commissioning reports, test sheets, mark-up drawings, punch lists, site documentation, and project turnover packages.
- Maintain accurate timesheets, expense reports, and project tracking updates.
- Client Engagement & Training
- Conduct client demonstrations, training sessions, and turnover activities to support successful operational adoption of installed systems.
- Represent Northland professionally during project meetings and client interactions.
- Build strong working relationships with clients, partners, vendors, and project stakeholders.
- Continuous Improvement
- Support the development and improvement of commissioning processes, technical standards, and project delivery practices.
- Contribute technical expertise and lessons learned to improve future project execution.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of experience in electronic security systems, commissioning, installation, service, design, or systems integration.
- Experience commissioning enterprise access control and video management systems.
- Working knowledge of enterprise security platforms such as LenelS2, Genetec, Software House C•CURE 9000, Milestone, or equivalent systems.
- Strong understanding of IP-based security systems and networking fundamentals.
- Ability to read and interpret system designs, schematics, riser diagrams, and construction documentation.
- Experience working in active construction environments and coordinating with multiple trades.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and organizational skills.
Preferred
Qualifications
- Manufacturer certifications in LenelS2, Genetec, Milestone, C•CURE, or similar platforms.
- Experience working on international security projects.
- Experience coordinating with client IT teams and third-party vendors.
- Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, routing, switching, and related infrastructure.
- Experience working in large-scale enterprise or mission-critical environments.
Working Environment
This position is a hybrid role involving a combination of onsite project work, office work, and remote work depending on project requirements.
Due to the nature of project delivery, significant travel is required. This role involves approximately 80% travel, including both domestic and international travel.
