Commis Chef

Compensation: £12.48 / hour
Shift pattern: This role will need to work across all shifts and requires weekend working.
About the role
The Commis Chef is responsible for preparing and cooking designated menu items under supervision, following airline catering specifications. This role supports the kitchen by performing food preparation, conducting basic taste checks, and ensuring meals meet strict hygiene and safety protocols. The Commis Chef actively contributes to portion control, presentation, and correct labelling of dishes to maintain traceability and compliance with airline standards.
Key Responsibilities
What you’ll be doing
- Prepare ingredients and basic menu items as directed by senior chefs
- Perform food preparation and cooking processes in accordance with flight catering specifications
- Conduct basic taste checks and report any deviations from quality standards promptly
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in all food preparation, storage, and service areas
- Handle inventory checks, stock rotation, and proper storage of food and catering equipment as instructed by the Sous chef
- Assist with coordinating orders, replenishment, and timely dispatch of catering supplies
- Follow all health, hygiene, and safety regulations critical to airline catering operations
- Control portion sizes and ensure presentation aligns with airline requirements
- Support accurate labelling of completed dishes and help maintain traceability
- Ensure compliance with airline hygiene and safety protocols
- Report sickness promptly and follow the roster system for smooth shift handovers
- Assist with proper storage and portioning to reduce food wastage
- Maintain assigned work area and kitchen tools responsibly

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
What we're looking for
- Basic culinary knowledge or relevant experience in a kitchen, hospitality, catering or food production environment is desirable. Experience in bulk production is an advantage but not essential
- Willingness to learn, take direction and develop skills in a fast-paced kitchen environment
- Attention to detail in food preparation and presentation
- Good communication skills and reliability
- Able to follow food safety, hygiene, and health and safety procedures consistently
- Able to work a shift pattern that may include early starts, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, in line with operational requirements
