The Commercial Lines Underwriter is a foundational underwriting role responsible for independently managing standard commercial property and casualty risks within established authority. This position works directly with agency partners to support portfolio growth, while maintaining disciplined underwriting practices. This role also focuses on new and renewal production, policy service, and relationship development with agents, while building technical expertise and business acumen in alignment with departmental strategy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review insurance applications to evaluate, classify, and rate policies in accordance with company underwriting guidelines and delegated authority.
• Independently underwrite and process standard new, renewal, and interim commercial transactions.
• Gather and analyze applications, inspection reports, insurance maps, credit reports, and loss history to assess risk quality and determine appropriate pricing and coverage terms.
• Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and professionally to agents, explaining coverage positions, required modifications, and pricing rationale.
• Develop and maintain productive working relationships with assigned agency partners to support retention and profitable growth.
• Collaborate with Marketing, Claims, and other internal departments to obtain additional information, clarify exposures, and ensure appropriate risk selection.
• Maintain documentation and underwriting files in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
• Develop technical knowledge and professional judgment through coaching, mentoring, and training opportunities.

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or GED required.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of one (1) year of relevant work experience required.

CERTIFICATIONS

Property and casualty insurance industry designations preferred (i.e. Associate in General Insurance [AINS], Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter [CPCU], etc.)
