Job Description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Commercial Risk Manager, EPC & Contracts based in Canada.

This is a senior commercial risk leadership opportunity within the rapidly evolving renewable energy and battery energy storage sector. You will help shape commercial strategy while ensuring robust risk management across complex projects and contracts. The role combines contract expertise, commercial judgment, risk analysis, and strategic decision-making across pre-contract and post-contract phases. You will partner with senior leadership, commercial teams, sales, engineering, and project execution stakeholders to identify risks and develop practical mitigation strategies. You’ll also help refine pricing approaches, governance processes, and approval frameworks in support of profitable growth. The ideal candidate will thrive in an international environment where high-value negotiations, regulatory considerations, and business-critical decisions require sound judgment and influence.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and ensure compliance with commercial and risk management processes, including conducting periodic process audits and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Support senior leadership with market research covering customer segments, competitive dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and strategic opportunities within battery energy storage and related markets.
  • Identify, assess, and manage technical and commercial risks throughout the project lifecycle, from pre-contract negotiations through post-contract execution.
  • Develop and promote practical risk mitigation strategies that enable leadership teams to make informed, timely commercial decisions.
  • Develop and refine pricing strategies that balance commercial opportunities with the organization’s risk appetite and broader go-to-market objectives.
  • Review and validate the accuracy and completeness of commercial and engineering information captured through the Risk Passport and related CRM systems.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage project Risk Passports and approval Delegation of Authority frameworks.
  • Represent the risk function in senior and headquarters-level risk reviews, presenting proposal details and key commercial considerations clearly to facilitate effective decision-making.
  • Provide business leadership with detailed analysis of external transaction risks and recommendations for mitigation.
  • Support commercial teams and execution stakeholders during complex contract negotiations and high-stakes commercial decisions.
  • Help strengthen governance, risk visibility, and consistency across international projects and contracting activities.
  • Requirements:

    • Significant experience in commercial management, contract management, risk management, or a related discipline within complex project environments.
    • Demonstrated experience negotiating large-scale, high-value contracts, including non-standard commercial and contractual positions.
    • Strong understanding of commercial risk assessment, mitigation strategies, contract governance, and project-related decision-making.
    • Proven ability to break down complex problems, develop creative and commercially sound solutions, and guide teams through high-stakes decisions.
    • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to advise senior leadership and translate complex commercial or risk topics into clear recommendations.
    • Experience working across international markets, with an understanding of different contracting practices, commercial norms, and regulatory environments.
    • Previous experience in the renewable energy sector is highly desirable; battery energy storage systems (BESS) experience is an advantage.
    • Familiarity with bonds, insurance requirements, compliance reporting, and related contractual risk mechanisms is an asset.
    • Strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, and ability to balance commercial growth objectives with risk appetite and governance requirements.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with sales, commercial, engineering, project execution, and leadership teams in a fast-paced environment.
    • Benefits:

      • Competitive compensation of approximately $175,000–$225,000 CAD per year, plus an annual bonus, with the range adjusted according to local currency and location.
      • Remote work flexibility for eligible employees.
      • Opportunity to work on large-scale renewable energy and battery storage projects with global impact.
      • Professional training and development opportunities to support continued career growth.
      • Opportunities for advancement and internal career mobility within a growing international organization.
      • Flexible work options designed to support employee well-being and work-life balance.
      • Opportunity to collaborate with international commercial, engineering, sales, and project teams.
      • Inclusive, equal-opportunity workplace committed to considering qualified candidates fairly.
