Job Description

Are you an experienced Commercial or Procurement professional looking to expand your skills and experience?

Our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials—but we’re also big on making a difference, not just because we should, but because we care.

That’s why we’re investing over £6 billion into our capital programme over the next five years, delivering resilient, sustainable water and wastewater services for millions of customers.

Within our Capital Commercial team, we’re looking for Commercial Managers to join us in our Coventry, Derby and Shrewsbury offices.

Are you already a Commercial Manager looking for your next challenge?
Perhaps you’re a Senior Quantity Surveyor ready to step up? Or are you a Procurement or Category professional looking to apply your skills in a more project-driven, infrastructure-focused environment?

WHY IS THIS ROLE DIFFERENT

This is a great opportunity for Procurement professionals to transition into the construction and infrastructure sector, where you’ll:

  • Move beyond transactional procurement into end-to-end commercial ownership
  • Work closely with project teams, engineers, and delivery partners
  • See how your decisions directly impact live infrastructure projects and communities
  • Develop skills in contract management, cost assurance, and NEC frameworks (full support and training provided)

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

As a Commercial Manager, you’ll play a key role in delivering our capital investment programme—working at the heart of projects that truly matter.

You’ll partner with colleagues across Design, Delivery, Finance and Legal, alongside our supply chain, to ensure we’re delivering the right outcomes for our customers and communities.

You’ll take ownership of commercial performance across a portfolio of projects—driving value, managing risk, and building strong supplier relationships.

You’ll make an impact by:

  • Leading commercial activities across capital projects and frameworks
  • Managing and developing Quantity Surveyors and early career professionals
  • Building strong, collaborative relationships with partners and suppliers
  • Leading tenders, negotiations, and contract management (including NEC4)
  • Challenging and validating costs to ensure value for money
  • Using data and insight to drive performance and continuous improvement
  • Identifying risks and opportunities to support successful project outcomes
  • Supporting sourcing strategies and embedding commercial best practice

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

We’re open to a range of backgrounds and are particularly keen to hear from Procurement professionals who want to broaden their career into delivery-focused roles.

You might come from:

  • Procurement / Category Management
  • Strategic sourcing or supplier management
  • Commercial management in construction or infrastructure
  • Quantity surveying or cost management

Experience:

  • Strong experience managing suppliers, contracts, and commercial outcomes
  • Experience running tenders, negotiations, or sourcing strategies
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and challenge constructively
  • Exposure to construction or NEC contracts is helpful—but not essential (we’ll support you)

Skills & approach:

  • Commercially curious with a focus on value and efficiency
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Confident communicator and collaborator
  • Proactive, self-driven, and keen to learn
  • Passion for continuous improvement

Qualifications:

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent experience)
  • Professional membership (CIPS, RICS or similar) is desirable
