• Contract duration: 6-month employment contract. Contract extension may be considered based on business requirements.

About your role

As Legal Counsel (commercial) at Fairphone, you will primarily focus on drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, ensuring legal compliance, and advising on risks for sales related matters. You’ll support the Head of Legal in improving the legal framework and collaborate with teams to provide practical legal solutions. You might also support the rest of the Legal team in other areas, such as customer support. We offer a 6-month contract, with the possibility of extending to the end of the year.

Key Responsibilities & Objectives

• Provide legal strategic advice to various departments with a strong focus on Commercial to help develop a comprehensive, long-term approach to our relationships with key distributors and resellers.
• Draft, review, and negotiate various agreements (e.g. sales and distribution agreements, GT&Cs, service / marketing cooperation/supplier agreements etc).
• Support with litigation and dispute management.
• Conduct legal research (e.g. legal due diligence of our partners and suppliers or desk top research to assess potential impact of new legislation(s)) where needed.
• Support and enable compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry guidance across all aspects of Fairphone’s commercial activities.
• Bring your legal expertise to support your fellow Legal team members and other teams in decision-making.

Your Skills & Experience

Must-Haves

• Bachelor’s degree in Law obtained in the European Union, the UK, or the US.
• Min. 3 years of experience practicing in a law firm and/or as in-house legal counsel, ideally as a commercial lawyer and preferably in the consumer goods industry and/or the technology industry.
• Strong skills in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts in alignment with business goals.
• Ability to proactively analyze complex legal issues, identify risks, take ownership of resolving challenges, and work confidently and independently to propose practical, well-reasoned solutions while ensuring high-quality, timely legal support across functions.
• Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Permit to work in the Netherlands.

Nice-to-Haves

• Fluency in Dutch, French, Spanish and/or German is a plus.
• Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to confidently present legal matters to internal stakeholders or at external events.
• Experience with contract lifecycle management tools and legal process automation.
• Affinity with sustainability, ethical business practices, or working in mission-driven companies.
