The Startup Technician IV is a senior-level field professional responsible for the startup, commissioning, and performance verification of complex HVAC systems across mission-critical commercial and industrial environments. This role demands deep technical expertise, a high degree of autonomy, and the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, engineers, controls technicians, and installation teams to ensure all systems are delivered in full compliance with design specifications, manufacturer guidelines, and applicable regulatory standards.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
1. System Commissioning
- Execute comprehensive startup and commissioning procedures for a wide range of HVAC systems including RTUs, chillers, boilers, VAV systems, VRF systems, and related equipment, encompassing warranty service and repair activities.
- Verify and document system performance against engineering design specifications and manufacturer-established performance criteria.
- Perform air and water system balancing utilizing industry-standard tools, instrumentation, and accepted methodologies.
2. Testing and Troubleshooting
- Plan and conduct functional and performance testing on all HVAC equipment to confirm proper operation and system integrity.
- Diagnose and resolve complex issues related to electrical systems, mechanical components, and Building Management System (BMS) controls.
- Ensure accurate operation of thermostats, sensors, actuators, and control panels in accordance with system design requirements.
3. Documentation and Reporting
- Prepare and submit thorough startup checklists, commissioning reports, and comprehensive system documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain detailed records of system readings, identified deficiencies, and all corrective actions taken.
- Communicate findings, observations, and technical recommendations clearly to project managers, engineers, and relevant stakeholders.
4. Client Interaction
- Deliver professional system orientation and operational training to building owners, facility managers, and on-site maintenance personnel.
- Address client concerns with professionalism and ensure complete satisfaction with system performance upon project delivery.
5. Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Adhere strictly to all applicable safety protocols, OSHA regulations, and company safety policies at all times while on site.
- Ensure that all systems meet local codes, industry standards, and energy efficiency requirements prior to project closeout.
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate effectively with installation teams, controls technicians, project managers, and engineering staff to ensure seamless project execution.
- Actively support quality assurance efforts and contribute to the completion of project punch list items.
Qualifications:
- 10 or more years of progressive HVAC experience with a demonstrated focus in service, startup, or commissioning roles.
- Proficiency with commissioning and field software tools, including Field Assist, Prism, or equivalent platforms.
- EPA Universal Certification required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC controls, mechanical system function, and associated electrical systems.
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply information from blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce clear, professional documentation.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and exercise sound technical judgment in the field.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, crouch, and climb ladders or scaffolding for extended periods in varying field conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as required.
- Willingness and ability to travel to project sites as needed, including extended travel throughout the region.
