Job Description

Commercial Editorial Manager

Location: Derry Street, HSK, London, W8 5HY

Position: Part Time (3 days/week) MAT Cover

About the role

We’re looking for a dynamic, commercially minded editor to join Metro’s Commercial team on part-time, maternity leave cover. This role acts as an essential bridge between editorial and commercial functions. You will identify revenue opportunities, shape cross‑platform partnerships, manage high‑value client integrations, and develop innovative commercial solutions across Metro’s print, digital and emerging formats.

This is a fast‑paced, highly collaborative role requiring exceptional editorial judgement and collaboration, strong commercial instinct, and the ability to manage multiple stakeholders with confidence and diplomacy.

Main Responsibilities

Identifying Commercial Opportunities

  • Monitor editorial plans, content lists and directly liaise with editorial teams to identify daily, short‑turnaround reactive revenue opportunities.
  • Identify longer‑term tactical and strategic commercial opportunities across Metro editorial platforms (digital, print, newsletters, franchises and new editorial series).
  • Compile proactive pitches for news‑based and evergreen content to support “always‑on” partnership potential.

Packaging & Costing Commercial Partnerships

  • Work closely with wider Sales and Partnerships teams to ideate and package full 360° bespoke editorial/commercial solutions.
  • Develop editorially grounded concepts for both proactive and reactive briefs, including costings and feasibility assessments.
  • Help shape editorial ideas, headlines and content structures to support sales and pitching.

Client‑Facing & Campaign Management

  • Act as the editorial integration lead on high‑value partnerships, stepping in for Partnership Leads where required.
  • Manage clients and agencies directly to ensure smooth delivery, editorial alignment and expectation management.
  • Oversee campaign execution when editorial involvement is central to delivery.

Innovative Media & Emerging Solutions

  • Oversee elements of new commercial tools and formats, such as text‑to‑audio players, sponsored widgets or interactive ads.
  • Provide out‑of‑hours or weekend support when commercial integrations require real‑time oversight.

Forward Planning & Internal Coordination

  • Compile regular planning lists by liaising with all editorial sections across digital and print, organising, formatting and distributing plans and content opportunities for wider commercial teams, including pricing where relevant.
  • Act as a central conduit between editorial and all commercial hubs, including project management, commerce, marketing, communications and ad operations.

Brand Safety & Editorial Integrity

  • Manage daily queries around brand safety and suitability, balancing client needs with editorial integrity and traffic requirements.
  • Provide timely judgement calls on sensitive or non‑brand‑safe content.

Pitch Materials & Collateral Creation

  • Produce pitch decks, one‑pagers and sales collateral for proactive and reactive packages.
  • Liaise with editorial to generate content ideas, headlines, and source analytical insights.
  • Coordinate with social and Insights teams as needed to shape strategy.

Newsletter Strategy Integration

  • Support cross‑platform strategy for newsletter launches and growth.
  • Identify print and digital opportunities and work with relevant stakeholders to shape long‑term newsletter development.

Brainstorms & Creative Participation

  • Attend and contribute to commercial brainstorms, bringing editorial insights and creative thinking.

PR & External Communication

  • Compile and present Metro brand decks to PR agencies.
  • Support creative agency engagement and onboarding where opportunities arise.

Person Specification

  • Strong editorial background with proven commercial understanding.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to sensitively balance editorial integrity with client requirements.
  • Confident stakeholder management and relationship‑building at all levels.
  • Experience creating pitch materials and generating editorial ideas.
  • Outstanding organisational skills and ability to juggle multiple deadlines.
  • Comfortable handling sensitive brand-safety decisions and legal queries.
  • Experience in media, publishing, or a similar editorial–commercial hybrid role preferred.

What We’re Looking For

A proactive, creative and solutions‑driven editor who thrives in a multifunctional environment, enjoys collaboration, and can move quickly without sacrificing quality. The ideal candidate will be as comfortable in editorial conferences as they are in commercial strategy meetings, and able to translate opportunities between both worlds seamlessly.
