A look into the role…

We are now recruiting for the role of Commercial Development Executive based within our Customer Proposition Department.

Reporting directly to our Commercial Development Manager, the Commercial Development Executive plays a key role in shaping the future of one of Northern Ireland’s largest retail networks, assessing new store developments, extensions, relocations and other investment opportunities, building robust commercial cases that directly inform senior leadership decision-making. You will work closely with colleagues across Retail, Property, Finance and Acquisitions, contributing to decisions that influence how and where the business invests.

The role offers broad exposure to retail investment, property development, financial forecasting and senior-level decision-making, while developing the commercial judgement required to progress within the business. It will be well suited to a candidate with strong analytical capability, attention to detail and the ability to communicate and influence senior stakeholders.

As Commercial Development Executive, you will:

• Assess retail development and investment opportunities, providing clear, evidence-based recommendations on commercial viability and next steps.
• Build sales, margin and cost forecasts to support opportunity evaluation, combining data analysis with market insight and professional judgement.
• Work collaboratively with subject matter experts across the business to develop accurate and well-informed cost assumptions.
• Prepare, communicate and maintain business case documentation to support effective governance, decision-making and auditability of investment proposals.
• Produce high-quality commercial and investment papers within agreed timescales, clearly identifying key risks, sensitivities and opportunities.
• Present findings and recommendations to a range of senior stakeholders, confidently communicating complex analysis in a clear and compelling way.
• Lead post-investment reviews, comparing actual performance against approved business cases, identifying drivers of variance and ensuring key learnings are incorporated into future investment assessments and forecasting methodologies.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships across functions within the Henderson Group, supporting effective collaboration and decision-making.
• Use data, technology and analytical tools to improve forecasting accuracy, reporting effectiveness and the efficiency of commercial development processes.

Skills for Success

Joining us as Commercial Development Executive, the minimum criteria you’ll need are:

• Minimum of 5 GCSEs including Maths and English, or equivalent.
• Significant experience in a commercial, retail operations, finance, or property development role within the convenience or supermarket sector.
• Proven ability to influence and collaborate effectively with a wide range of internal stakeholders.
• Strong commercial and financial awareness, with the ability to translate data into clear, actionable recommendations.
• A good understanding of the Northern Ireland supermarket and convenience retail market.
• A full, current UK or Irish driving licence.

The skills and attributes you’ll need include:

• Excellent written, verbal and visual communication skills, with experience presenting analysis and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
• A thorough and structured approach, seeing tasks through from inception to completion.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail, balanced with the ability to see the bigger picture.
• A proactive mindset, with the confidence to take initiative and ownership of work.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously, adapting to changing demands and priorities in a fast-paced commercial environment.

It is desirable if you have:

• A third-level qualification.
• Previous experience assessing development, investment or growth opportunities.
• Previous experience analysing and interpreting profit and loss accounts.
• A willingness to challenge existing ways of working and propose creative, practical solutions.

This is a full-time position working 36.5 hours per week. Working hours will be 8:45am-4:45pm Monday to Thursday and 8:45am-3:45pm Friday. Hybrid and flexible working arrangements are available.

Please note this role will require the successful applicant to make occasional visits or business trips away from home.
