Hosting Team & Department

Coloplast R&D/Center of Excellence / engineering analysis. The student will be enrolled in the ongoing activities and discussions within the Simulation Team, focusing on virtual prototyping and modelling.

Project Description

Medical adhesives play a critical role in ostomy products, where user comfort and secure attachment depend on a complex interaction between bulk adhesive deformation and interfacial failure.

This project aims to develop a deeper mechanical understanding of adhesive behavior through advanced experimental testing under mixed-mode loading conditions (Mode I and Mode II), extending beyond conventional bulk material characterization. Novel test methods will be used to measure cohesive traction-separation relationships directly, enabling extraction of material parameters that can be implemented in numerical simulations.

In this way, the current study leans on experience gained from previous investigation and existing specimen designs. By combining experimental fracture mechanics with finite element modeling, the project will establish predictive models of adhesive peeling and detachment.

The resulting models will improve the ability to predict peel forces, user comfort, and product performance, while providing a stronger scientific foundation for adhesive development.
