JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/ Objective

East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families and the communities.

The partnership with Bronx Regional High School is designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school.

East Side House Settlement’s Learning-to-Work Program enhances the school’s academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skill development, and internships.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Director of Bronx Regional High school, the college counselor, will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Maintain a caseload of senior students
  • Meet with students, individually and in groups, to talk about the college process and individual college choices.
  • Educating students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; advising students and families as they go through the process; and helping students and families aspire realistically and choose wisely.
  • Facilitate periodic college workshops for students and/or parents and families.
  • Provide monthly data information on college admissions, application status, college acceptances, financial aid info, and other relevant statistics, to program Director.
  • Identify and establish linkage with ASAP, BON, EOP, HEOP SEEK, and various other programs on their college campus to support students
  • Coordinate College field trips relevant to our student population.
  • Maintain flexible hours and workdays, some overnight trips required.
  • Organize 2 Career day events

Qualifications: Qualifications

To perform this position successfully, the College Counselor must be able to fulfill all the elements of the job description to the highest standard and be able to work well with colleagues in a high energy and collaborative work environment. Additional qualifications include:

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience with youth at risk and/or school setting
  • Prior experience with counseling and/or experience working with and knowledge of community resources.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with family, staff and community members
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with participating families
  • Ability to use public transportation and travel independently
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, flexibility and follow-through
  • Excellent computer skills including strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Bilingual English/ Spanish strongly preferred

Employees must be clear to work at ESH. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Work Environment

This job operates in the office. Time in the office will be used to input case notes, supervision, etc. Travel is expected for agency event or college trips.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. This role requires the ability to carry, lift, and pull activity supplies to family homes.

Travel

The College counselor will be expected to travel for day and overnight college tours.

Expected Work Schedule

The work schedule expected for this position is: Mon – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, as aligned to the needs of the program/ service. The schedule may be adjusted based on ESH’s operational needs, with notice provided whenever possible. Possible work on weekends, holidays or after work hours for projects, special events, etc. to meet program operational goals.
