The role | Te tūnga

As a Collections Assistant, you will support the development, maintenance and accessibility of collections and archives across the National Library and Archives New Zealand. This role involves hands on work with a wide variety of materials and formats, including processing client requests, supporting Reading Room operations, undertaking collection care tasks, and assisting with digitisation, exhibitions, and loans services.

You will retrieve, handle, and re‑shelve collection items, maintain accurate records in collection management systems, help ensure safe use of materials, and contribute to the smooth operation of repository and service environments. Working closely with colleagues across Access Services, you will play an important part in ensuring our collections are protected, discoverable and accessible for everyone.

What you bring | Nōu te rourou

  • A relevant certificate or diploma (NZQF Level 5) or equivalent training/experience in a Library or Archives setting, with GLAM sector experience or study towards a qualification considered an advantage
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with confidence using standard computer applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Experience or confidence working in warehouse or repository environments, including undertaking physical tasks such as lifting and moving items
  • A customer-focused approach with clear, professional communication skills and the ability to support varied client needs
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a busy team environment, adapting well to changing priorities
  • Willingness to learn new processes and equipment, including photographic or scanning technologies

The appointing range for this role is $60,250 – $67,480, dependent on your level of experience.
