General Function:

Seasonal Cold Weather Shelter Van Greeter for the South Snohomish County Extreme Weather Shelter. Under the oversight of the Shelter Services Program Manager, this role rides with the Van Driver to provide a safe, welcoming experience for guests during evening pickups and morning returns. Primary routes include Lynnwood City Hall, James Village, and Bank of America at Hwy 99 and 173rd St, transporting to and from Maple Park Church. Pickup and drop-off locations may change based on need and partner guidance.

Principal Activities:

  • Welcome guests at pickup points and on the vehicle, setting a friendly, respectful tone
  • Provide simple information about shelter access, rules, and available resources
  • Assist guests with seating and small belongings to support a safe ride
  • Monitor guest well-being during transit and notify the driver of any concerns
  • Communicate timing or capacity issues to shelter staff and adjust as directed
  • Maintain accurate passenger counts and note any incidents or key observations
  • Support smooth, on-time evening pickups and morning returns
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • Accurate counts and notes improve service quality, safety, and reporting during activations

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Available for evening pickups and early morning returns during weather activations
  • Able to assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle and help with small belongings
  • Comfortable working outdoors at pickup points in cold, rain, wind, and low light
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to complete brief passenger counts and notes

Required Skills:

  • Friendly, empathetic, and professional communication with guests, volunteers, and staff
  • Calm problem solving and basic de-escalation; maintains a steady presence during stressful moments
  • Teamwork and clear radio or phone communication with the Van Driver and shelter staff
  • Cultural humility and the ability to engage positively with diverse populations
  • Basic knowledge of local streets and alternate routes is a plus
