The salary range for this position is CAD $39.47/Hr. - CAD $49.29/Hr.

Reporting to the Regional Manager, Coding Informatics, Documentation & Data Quality, this key role provides leadership and expert guidance in coding standards, training, and data quality across LM HIM. You’ll support coding teams and HIM leaders, ensure compliance with provincial and national standards, liaise with CIHI and the Ministry of Health, and lead data quality improvement initiatives. You'll also develop training programs, update policies and procedures, and support audit and evaluation processes.

What You Bring

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited Health Information Management Diploma or Bachelor Program.
  • Five (5) years of recent, related experience in Coding inpatient and surgical day care records in a tertiary setting, including two (2) years as a data analytics or data quality analyst, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Canadian College of Health Information Management (CHIM) certified and active membership with the Canadian Association of Health Information Management (CHIMA).
  • Valid BC Driver’s License.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated understanding of quality assurance techniques and processes related to continuous quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize report writer tools, such as Crystal Report design, MS SQL Server.
  • Demonstrated ability to code in ICD-10-CA/CCI and abstract in the CIHI Discharge Abstract database.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Case Mix Groups, Comprehensive Ambulatory Classification System (CACS), Resource Intensity Weight (RIW) and Expected Length of Stay (ELOS).
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and demonstrated ability to utilize computer software applications, including Microsoft office Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and teach staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop learning materials and tools.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work to deadlines under pressure, with minimal supervision and frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others, demonstrate leadership and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate related computer programs and equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

Your Day to Day

  • Leads coding standards and data quality initiatives, providing expert guidance to HIM Coders and staff on coding processes, patient record standards, and related practices.
  • Develops, maintains, and delivers training programs and materials for new hires, practicum and co-op students, and returning staff to ensure consistent application of coding standards.
  • Acts as the primary liaison with CIHI, BCRCP, BC Trauma Registry, and other databases, managing coding queries, implementing new or revised standards, and communicating updates to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with Coding Coordinators, Leadership, HIM teams, and reporting/analytics units to ensure the accuracy and integrity of coded patient data and alignment with Ministry and CIHI requirements.
  • Develops and maintains policies, procedures, and manuals related to coding standards and data quality, and oversees quality audit processes using evidence-based quality improvement methodologies.
  • Supports recruitment and staff development by assisting in the creation of coding proficiency assessments, identifying data quality issues, and recommending targeted training initiatives.
  • Works with cross-functional teams and participates in program development, ensuring codified data supports emerging healthcare delivery models; provides on-site support as needed and performs other related duties.
