Job Description

The Codes & Testing Specialist is responsible for leading and coordinating building code compliance, testing, product approvals, and technical evaluations for commercial roofing and building envelope products. The role manages projects from initial scope and test development through laboratory testing and final approval, while coordinating with internal stakeholders, third-party laboratories, certification agencies, and regulatory organizations. The position also provides technical expertise in building codes, construction practices, building envelope systems, and testing requirements; supports product development and troubleshooting; and maintains the company’s code compliance resources, approvals, listings, and technical guidance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Project Leadership and Management
  • Lead Building Code, material property testing, and product approval projects from initial scope development through testing, evaluation, and final approval; support assigned fire and wind testing projects in coordination with the respective Program Managers.
  • Establish project priorities, schedules, resources, budgets, and deliverables while coordinating activities across internal departments and external agencies.
  • Monitor project status, identify risks and constraints, resolve issues, and communicate progress and key decisions to stakeholders and management.
  1. Building Code Compliance and Product Approvals
  • Manage and support CCM’s building code compliance programs, including but not limited to ICC-ES reports, Florida Evaluation Reports, Miami-Dade Approvals, DORA listings, product approvals, code guides, and other regulatory documentation.
  • Develop and review testing programs and technical documentation to ensure products and assemblies meet applicable building codes, standards, and approval requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance on code compliance and respond to internal and external code-related inquiries.
  1. Testing and Technical Evaluation
  • Coordinate and participate in third-party testing with organizations such as UL, FM, ICC-ES, Intertek, NEMO, and other recognized laboratories.
  • Develop, construct, and evaluate roof, wall, and building envelope test assemblies and assist with troubleshooting test failures and developing retest strategies.
  • Review test data, laboratory reports, drawings, specifications, and installation requirements to confirm technical accuracy and applicability.
  1. Technical Research, Compliance Support, and Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain current knowledge of building codes, standards, testing protocols, evaluation reports, listings, and regulatory requirements.
  • Research emerging requirements and changes to codes and standards and communicate their potential impact to affected stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain technical procedures, code guides, training materials, and other resources that support consistent code compliance and technical decision-making.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent knowledge of applicable building codes, particularly requirements related to roofing, exterior walls, fire performance, wind resistance, and building envelope systems.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial roofing and building construction practices, including roof assemblies, wall assemblies, substrates, insulation, membranes, fasteners, adhesives, and related building envelope components.
  • Strong understanding of ASTM standards and laboratory testing protocols applicable to building materials and assemblies.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, roof plans, construction details, specifications, and installation requirements.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to establish priorities, manage schedules, coordinate resources, track deliverables, and communicate project status.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects involving multiple internal departments and external organizations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in evaluating test results, construction details, and compliance issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead in-person and virtual meetings and communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related project management tools.
  • Willingness to evaluate and implement new technologies, processes, and tools to improve project management and testing activities.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Technology, Building Science, Architecture, Building Technology, or a related technical field with 3 years of relevant experience; OR an Associate degree/equivalent technical certification in a related technical field with 5 years of relevant experience. Preferred: 5+ years of relevant experience, particularly in commercial roofing/building envelope systems, code compliance, product approvals, or construction-material testing.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional after-hours or weekend work required based on testing schedules, project requirements, or travel.
  • Approximately 25% travel per month may be required.
  • Field: Field work may involve travel by air or automobile to testing laboratories.
  • Frequent work in the Carlisle testing facility, including construction of test specimens and performance of testing.
  • Pace: The position operates in a fast-paced environment involving multiple concurrent projects, competing priorities, and coordination with various CCM departments and external organizations.
