Description

The Administrative Office of the Courts is the operational arm of the Judicial Branch. The court system
employs nearly 3,300 personnel who support 406 elected justices, judges, and circuit court clerks.

The Kentucky Court of Appeals has an immediate need to fill a COA Chief Legal Deputy Clerk. This position is
in Franklin County.

The COA Chief Legal Deputy Clerk is responsible for supervising the Clerk’s office of the Court of Appeals and
providing legal services and advice to the Court.

Due to the nature of job duties and responsibilities, this position is not authorized for virtual work.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs functions of the Clerk in the Clerk’s absence, as directed by the Clerk
  • Supervises employees in the clerk’s office, including coaching employees, documenting personnel issues, and
    discipline where necessary in consultation with the Clerk.
  • Legal determination of documents for processing in the Clerk’s office.
  • Answers questions concerning appellate procedure and particular case status for judges, attorneys, pro selitigants, the press; legal publishers; and the public by phone and letter.
  • Performs the running of weekly clerk’s office reports, identifying procedural problems and drafting orders to
    correct procedural problems.
  • Drafts orders for court of appeals judges as needed. Examples: supplementation of the record, show cause
    orders, complex orders regarding petitions for rehearing; and orders modifying opinions.
  • Assists staff attorney section with questions concerning motion practice and collaborates on best practices
    and procedure, in consultation with the Clerk.
  • Assists in the preparation and presentation of seminars including the annual bar convention and district bar
    meetings.
  • Participates in special projects as directed by the chief judge or clerk.
  • Assists in staff training and implementation of court of appeals electronic case management system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION:
Advanced Degree – Graduate of an accredited law school

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:
Five (5) years of experience in appellate practice

Must Be Able to Kneel, Crouch or Climb

Working Conditions

Typically work in an office setting.
Travel may be required.
Unexpected extended hours may be required to resolve emergency motions.
