Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Programs, sets up, and operates CNC milling, lathe, or other machinery according to blueprint specifications
  • Utilizes G or M code and CAM software (MasterCAM, MAZATROL, Haas Visual Programming System, etc.)
  • Tests accuracy of settings and programs
  • Follows all safe work practices & safety rules
  • Fabricates metallic and nonmetallic parts, and fits and assembles machined parts into complete units
  • Applies knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, layout techniques, operating conventional, special-purpose, and CNC machines and machining centers
  • Checks blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machine, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required
  • Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications, using precision measuring instruments
  • Set up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks
  • May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance
  • May develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated
  • May confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems
  • May specialize in setting up and operating CNC machines and machining centers or set up and operate CNC machines linked to automated storage, retrieval, and moving devices
  • Utilize CNC and conventional mills, lathes, grinders and other machine and hand tools to produce precision parts
  • Set-up, program and operate CNC mills and lathes with live tooling
  • May fabricate machine replacement parts
  • Perform general machine shop functions
  • Effectively prioritizes jobs to meet deadlines and work in an efficient and timely manner
  • Complete required documentation
  • Maintain compliance with Quality related to medical device regulations and requirements
  • May train machinists in department
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 7-10 years of machinist experience using conventional machine and hand tools
  • 3-5 years CNC set-up, programming, and operating experience
  • Must be able to perform close tolerance machining
  • Able to read and understand written instructions/specifications such as technical manuals, design specifications and mechanical drawings.
  • Good interpersonal skills, mathematical aptitude and logical problem-solving skills necessary
  • Good verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and still function as a team player
  • Proficient computer skills
