Position Summary:
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays an essential role in supporting high-quality patient care. Working under the direction of the Nurse Manager and the direct supervision of an RN or LPN, the CNA assists patients with daily living activities, comfort measures, and mobility needs while consistently promoting dignity, independence, and safety. This role is an important part of a collaborative, supportive care team, contributing to a compassionate care environment through careful observation, timely reporting of patient changes, and clear communication with nursing staff. By supporting individualized care plans and organizational standards, CNAs help ensure patients receive consistent, attentive, and patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct patient care including bathing, grooming, toileting, repositioning, feeding assistance, and general comfort measures as directed by licensed nursing staff.
- Observe and promptly report patient condition changes, abnormal findings, and safety concerns to the RN or LPN to support timely clinical decision-making.
- Assist with safe patient mobility, including transfers, ambulation, turning, and the proper use of mobility aids while following fall prevention protocols.
- Support patient care procedures by gathering supplies, assisting nurses during interventions, and helping maintain clean, safe treatment spaces.
- Accurately document patient care activities, vital observations, and completed tasks within the required charting system and departmental standards.
- Communicate respectfully and effectively with patients, families, and care team members while promoting a calm, supportive, and healing environment.
QualificationsLicenses and Certifications Required:
- Current North Dakota CNA certification required.
- BLS certification required within orientation period.
Educational Requirements:
- Certification required.
- Clerical training preferred.
Experience Requirements:
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Nursing Assistant experience preferred.
Special Skills or Training Requirements:
- Computer and keyboarding skills.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and sustained movement to meet a variety of patient care needs. CNAs must be able to safely lift or support 35-50 pounds independently and more during team lifts or while using equipment. The role requires manual dexterity, the ability to respond rapidly to patient needs, clear verbal communication, and physical stamina to meet the demands of a fast-paced medical unit.
Environmental Requirements:
Work is performed in an acute medical nursing unit with continual exposure to patients, clinical staff, and medical procedures. CNAs may encounter bodily fluids, disinfectants, and various medical equipment and must follow all infection control and safety protocols. The environment involves shifting priorities, high patient activity, and emotionally sensitive situations, requiring adaptability, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining safety and professionalism at all times.
