Performs skilled machining & mechanical work inspecting, repairing, rebuilding, and installing critical / large plant equipment (turbine rotors, generators, pumps, fans, etc.). Some components can weigh 90 tons or more.
What You'll Do:
Operates machine shop and portable machine tools typically to perform rough turning, boring, drilling and threading operations, holding tolerances of +/- 0.010". Has the ability to interpret and work from simple prints & specifications as well as perform supporting measurement activities.
Performs all work in accordance with shop safety and quality standards; completes required paper work and facilitates appropriate record keeping. Has skilled abilities needed to maintain shop equipment.
Fabricates jigs and fixtures to support shop work load.
Performs precision fitting of component parts & performs alignment of rotating equip.
Utilizes all manner of hand and power tools, performs rigging to lift components. Interfaces with outside resources assigned to assist in the work.
Demonstrates the ability to perform work at CMS or on-site at plants with direction /support from a Machinist 1st class, Machinist 2nd class or supervisor.
Reports irregularities or abnormal conditions. Take notes and keep records as directed.
Performs all work in accordance with safety regulations and acceptable shop processes and practices.
Support AEP's cultural goals and expectations.
Performs similar or less skilled work, as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
Education requirements are listed below:
High school diploma or equivalent education and experience.
Associate degree in technical or scientific field preferred.
Other Must Haves:
Physical demand level is Medium
Third class machinist must demonstrate the skills and abilities contained within the job description or satisfactory progression toward these skills and abilities prior to the end of the probationary period; and also demonstrate the skills and ability required for promotion to second class within one year from the initial hiring date.
Successful completion of the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test is required for this position.

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: M – Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
