Job Description
With our strong investment in research and development and our culture of continuous improvement, Hexcel is the industry leader in the manufacturing of advanced lightweight composite materials, including carbon fiber, woven reinforcements, resins, prepregs, honeycombs and engineered core and composite structures. We invite you to join the Hexcel team at various manufacturing sites, sales offices, and R&D centers around the globe. Become a part of the “strength within.”
Hexcel is currently seeking a CMM Programmer/ Metrologist or our Amesbury MA location.
The CMM Programmer / Metrologist develops, validates, maintains and improves Coordinate Measuring Machine programs used to verify product conformity at ARC Technologies. The position independently translates engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing requirements into accurate, repeatable and efficient inspection methods, with primary emphasis on Zeiss CMM equipment and Calypso software.
This position supports incoming, in-process, final and First Article Inspection; analyzes dimensional data; and serves as a technical resource to Quality, Engineering and Operations. The role is an experienced individual-contributor position and may provide technical instruction and day-to-day guidance but does not require formal personnel supervision.
Responsibilities
- Develop, debug, validate, document and optimize online and offline CMM programs using Zeiss Calypso.
- Build inspection strategies from CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications and applicable customer requirements.
- Independently interpret and apply GD&T in accordance with the drawing-specified revision of ASME Y14.5, including complex datum reference frames, position, profile, orientation, form and material-condition requirements.
- Perform or support incoming, first-piece, in-process, final and First Article dimensional inspections.
- Analyze CMM results and dimensional trends; clearly communicate findings and potential measurement or product concerns.
- Verify CMM, probe, stylus, fixture and measurement-system readiness before use. Support calibration, probe qualification and verification activities, and appropriately escalate out-of-tolerance or unreliable measurement conditions.
- Maintain controlled CMM programs, setup instructions, inspection reports and associated records in accordance with ARC, Hexcel and customer requirements.
- Perform manual dimensional inspection using appropriate precision instruments when CMM inspection is unavailable or not the most suitable method.
- Support nonconformance investigations, root-cause analysis and corrective-action activities by distinguishing part variation from programming, fixturing, setup, probe or measurement-system error.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Quality and Operations to improve inspection methods, fixturing, probing strategies, program cycle time and measurement repeatability; Develop clear work instructions and provide technical training and support to inspectors, technicians and operators.
Required Qualifications
- Three or more years of hands-on CMM programming and dimensional-inspection experience in aerospace, defense, precision machining or another controlled manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency developing, modifying, debugging and validating Zeiss Calypso CMM programs.
- Demonstrated ability to independently interpret complex engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications and GD&T requirements.
- Associate degree or technical certification in metrology, manufacturing technology, quality, machining or a related discipline preferred but not necessary
- Working knowledge of dimensional metrology, datum alignment, probe qualification, fixturing, measurement repeatability and inspection reporting.
- Proficiency with manual inspection equipment such as calipers, micrometers, height gages, indicators, bore or pin gages and surface-plate methods.
- Ability to analyze dimensional results, troubleshoot measurement discrepancies and communicate technical findings across functions.
- Ability to create accurate, traceable technical records and follow document- and configuration-control requirements.
- Ability to follow applicable safety procedures, quality-system requirements and controlled work instructions; maintain a clean and organized metrology work area.
- Experience with advanced Calypso functions, offline programming, conditional logic, loops or automated reporting preferred but not necessary
Salary range for this role: $105,000-$130,000
