This opportunity is exclusively available to individuals who have successfully completed the ATDM program. Due to the nature of the work involved, only U.S. citizens are eligible for consideration. This is an onsite position based in Danville, Virginia, and is not eligible for remote work.

About the Role

The Metrology Intern position is designed for recent graduates of the ATDM Metrology program who are beginning their careers in advanced manufacturing. This role supports CNC machining and metrology operations while providing opportunities to gain hands-on experience and develop advanced skills through mentoring and on-the-job training.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform dimensional inspections using hand metrology tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, and surface plates.
  • Support CNC machinists by verifying in-process dimensions and ensuring parts meet specifications.
  • Assist with first article, in-process, and final inspections as needed.
  • Operate a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) for specific inspections under supervision.
  • Record measurement results accurately and maintain organized documentation
  • Follow safety protocols and comply with industry standards such as ITAR, ISO, and ANSI.
  • Assist with basic preventive maintenance routines on metrology equipment.
  • Collaborate with CMA staff and project teams to support metrology projects.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support project and learning goals.

Work Location

We are looking for staff to work onsite in Danville, VA.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Recent completion of Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing's Metrology program
  • Basic understanding of metrology processes and CMM operations.
  • Familiarity with GD&T fundamentals and blueprint reading.
  • Strong work ethics, attention to detail, and eagerness to develop technical skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work in a team, and communicate effectively.
  • Reliable and self-motivated with a commitment to safety and quality.

Physical Requirements:

  • May sit or stand for long periods of time while completing duties
  • Must be able to move freely between facilities
  • Must be able to operate and manipulate a keyboard
  • May lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis

Compensation & Other Details This is a temporary position with an anticipated duration of four months. The role offers an hourly wage of $20, and housing will be provided as a taxable benefit. Please note that this position is not eligible for participation in IALR’s other benefits programs.
