A Brief Overview

The Clinical Simulation Technician works with the simulation team to provide technical support and expertise for simulation operations and technology to include preparation and maintenance of complex computerized, high-fidelity manikins and associated software. The technician collaborates with the simulation team to ensure that the appropriate equipment and supplies are available for each simulation scenario presented and assists with the general maintenance of the simulation environment. Flexible hours, varied schedules, typically works Monday through Friday

Essential Functions

  • Participates in developing, organizing, and conducting educational courses or events that use clinical simulation technologies.
    • Provides set up, operation of, storing, and maintenance of simulators, task trainers, and other simulation equipment
    • Prepare simulation environment to accurately represent clinical setting using simulated clinical supplies and equipment
    • Provides theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested.
    • Portray the role of the patient, family member, or other scenario participant as needed.
    • Prepares documents, setup boxes, and supplies for each simulation.
    • Programs and tests simulation scenarios for faculty simulation facilitators, assuring that the facility, equipment, manikins, standardized patients, and supplies are set up appropriately and that desired outcomes will be achieved; interprets and implements changes when necessary.
    • Demonstrates safe operation of common medical equipment and associated resources
    • Sets up, installs, operates, and stores IT equipment
    • Provides general support and troubleshooting to faculty and other simulation staff in the technical aspects of simulation.
    • Installs updates and performs scheduled maintenance to all IT assets
    • Undertakes inspections of IT equipment to monitor condition and report failures
    • Keeps apprised of all emerging technologies affecting simulation and data capture and participates in technical training.
  • Collaborates with supervisor to organize, maintain and restock skills lab and simulation laboratory supplies.
    • Establishes and maintains inventory of simulation equipment and supplies for simulation work.
    • Assists with coordination of access, availability and scheduling of simulation resources
    • Ensures adequate security and levels of consumables and equipment are maintained
    • Ensures preparation and storage areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and orderly manner
    • Develops and maintains ability to problem solve/trouble shoot issues with simulation equipment
    • Audits, test, and ensures all equipment and system run efficiently according to current specification requirements, keeping apprised of periodic product information releases.
    • Maintains current knowledge of clinical simulation equipment catalogs and operation manuals
    • Creates technical documentation materials of best practices for use of clinical simulation equipment.
    • Collaborates with clinical engineering on maintenance and repair of manikins in accordance with warranty specifications and vendor recommendations.
    • Uses chain of command to communicate issues with participants; curriculum; equipment/supplies for prompt resolution.
  • Coordinates data collection for outcomes from each simulation
    • Maintains documents and records in support of simulation center operations
    • Collaborates with simulation manager to aggregate data for analysis on a quarterly basis.
    • Participates in team discussion of analysis of outcomes. Assists in or recommends the development of enhancement to the clinical simulation technologies


Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Experience Qualifications

  • 1-3 years Professional experience in a healthcare setting Preferred and
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology Preferred and
  • Experience in computer technology and troubleshooting Preferred
  • Previous experience working in a simulation lab Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) to interact with and work effectively with other faculty, staff, students, and vendors in a positive, helpful and cooperative working relationship.
  • Skills in operating a PC with experience in MS Office and the ability to learn additional software programs, including audiovisual and computerized simulation equipment.
  • Clinical knowledge and experience working in a healthcare related field such as EMT, paramedic, or other allied health profession certification
  • Mechanical skills to competently maintain and use equipment in the simulation center.
  • Organizational and time management skills to keep materials in order, track various projects, maintain files, and follow through assignments to completion.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technology
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to include use of computer technology in program presentations and/or data analysis.
  • Able to be self-directed, with minimum supervision, and detail oriented.
  • Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritization skills.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Health ServicesBCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association Required
  • Emergency Medical Technician Upon Hire Required or
  • Paramedic Upon Hire Preferred or
  • Other allied health profession certification and training Upon Hire
