Job Description

This position will provide clinical pharmacy services within Behavioral Health Group's (BHG) Mobile Opioid Treatment Unit (MOTU), which expands access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder in rural and underserved communities.

The Clinical Pharmacist will serve as an embedded member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, collaborating with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, counselors, and operational leaders to optimize medication management, improve patient outcomes, and enhance medication safety for patients receiving opioid treatment services.

The pharmacist will support direct patient care activities, interdisciplinary case consultation, patient education, quality improvement initiatives, and community partnership development while helping establish a sustainable and replicable clinical pharmacy model for mobile opioid treatment programs.

The pharmacist may also participate in teaching, scholarship, and experiential education opportunities for pharmacy learners, when applicable.

The key responsibilities of the Clinical Pharmacist - Unpaid include but not limited to:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, counselors, and operational leaders to optimize care for patients receiving treatment for opioid use disorder.
  • Provide clinical consultation regarding methadone treatment, medication interactions, side effect management, and patient-specific medication concerns.
  • Perform medication reconciliation and identify potential medication-related risks or opportunities for optimization.
  • Support safe medication practices and regulatory compliance within the mobile opioid treatment setting.
  • Provide patient education regarding medications, adherence, overdose prevention, naloxone use, and harm reduction strategies.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary case reviews and treatment planning discussions.
  • Support development and implementation of pharmacy-related workflows, protocols, and best practices for mobile opioid treatment services.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives and outcomes reporting associated with grant objectives.
  • Collaborate with community healthcare partners to strengthen continuity of care and transitions between treatment settings.
  • Serve as an educational resource for staff, learners, and community partners regarding addiction medicine and evidence-based treatment approaches.
  • Assist in developing a sustainable clinical pharmacy model that may be replicated across BHG programs nationally.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with healthcare providers, patients, community partners, and learners.
  • Ability to effectively present information in team meetings, educational sessions, and community settings.
  • Ability to work independently in a mobile healthcare environment while collaborating within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to navigate electronic health records, scheduling platforms, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based pharmacologic treatment of opioid use disorder, harm reduction principles, and co-occurring medical conditions.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations governing opioid treatment programs is preferred.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

The Clinical Pharmacist - Unpaid must have the following qualifications.

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
  • North Carolina pharmacist licensure or eligibility for licensure required.
  • Clinical experience in ambulatory care, addiction medicine, population health, behavioral health, or related fields preferred.
  • Completion of a PGY1 residency preferred.
  • Experience working collaboratively within interdisciplinary healthcare teams preferred.
  • Board certification (BCPS, BCACP, BCPP, or related specialty) preferred.
