Job Description

Position Title

Clinical Paramedic - Emergency Department - PRNGreat Bend Hospital

Career Interest:

The Emergency Department Clinical Paramedic provides paramedic service, to patients in the Emergency Department, that are within the scope of the Paramedic's State Paramedic certification. Responsible for implementing technical procedures and care to patients safely and effectively. Any service provided directly to a patient must be pursuant to protocols, procedures, and policies of the hospital and pursuant in a variety of ED settings including triage, trauma, and general patient care.

The clinical Paramedic will function within the scope of practice and perform additional tasks approved by the medical director of the emergency department. The clinical paramedic will work in conjunction with the ED staff to care for and manage patients. Carrying out plans of care by completing delegated tasks as assigned, maintaining clinical and technical competencies, and utilizing resources appropriately. Demonstrates exemplary teamwork, critical thinking skills, and communication with other members of the healthcare team to ensure safe, effective, and quality patient care, maintaining professionalism always.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Collects and assess, initial and on-going data about the health status of the patient
  • Initiates and/or revises an individualized plan of care that includes immediate and long-term outcomes for the patient/family and reflects the plan of the entire health care team.
  • Carries out interventions safely and in compliance with policy to facilitate achievement of expected outcomes.
  • Evaluates patient response to intervention/therapy based upon expected outcomes.
  • Provides patient education by explaining procedures, medications, and giving instructions at a level the patient can understand.
  • Address’s patients’ questions and concerns.
  • Documents and communicates all required components of patient care.
  • Provides care to acutely and critically ill patients, in a highly technical and ongoing monitoring environment.
  • Offers unsolicited assistance for help
  • Administration of all medications approved by Emergency Department Medical Director.
  • Assists organizational EVS employees with room turn-over and preparation for patient care areas for additional patients
  • Completes delegated tasks in a timely manner
  • Employs strategies to promote health in a safe environment and ensures patient safety
  • Ensures excellent communication with all other staff members and team members
  • Ensures that all interventions and/or patient interactions are appropriately documented in the patient’s medical record
  • Ensures the work environment is clean and tidy, and without clutter
  • Maintains exceptional phlebotomy skills including obtaining and labeling specimens without difficulty and per hospital policy (within scope of practice) and yearly competencies per hospital policy
  • Participates in the department Haz-Mat training and maintains competency to appropriately don and doff all Haz-Mat materials, as well as participate in decontamination of any contaminated patients
  • Performs assigned clinical duties such as EKG completion, patient registration, patient transportation, point-of-care testing, and ensures that all results are documented and reported to the appropriate healthcare provider
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Paramedic active upon hire.


Required Licensure and Certification

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Licensed Paramedic - State Board of Emergency Medical Services


Required Language Skills

  • Fluent English - Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
