Clinical Nurse Special - Cardiac Assessment Unit/ (potentially leading to) Candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioner (cANP) / Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) - Cardiology

Full-time (37.5 hours per week) | Permanent

Salary €62,699.00 - €79,221.00 dependent on relevant experience

The Purpose of This Role:

The CNS, CANP, ANP will play a pivotal role in the operational and clinical coordination of the CAU. The post holder will act as the primary liaison between General Practitioners, Consultant Cardiologists, diagnostic departments, booking teams, ward teams and patients to ensure the efficient and safe running of the service.

A key aspect of the role will involve clinical triage of referrals against agreed acceptance and exclusion criteria, ensuring that only appropriate patients are accepted into the service and that referrals align with the hospital's cardiology capabilities, available diagnostic pathways, inpatient capacity and cath-lab services.

Candidate Criteria:

Qualifications:

  • Be registered, or be eligible for registration, in the General Nurse Division of the Register of Nurses kept by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI]
  • Meet all NMBI requirements for CANP/ANP registration and maintenance of registration.
  • Hold a Master’s degree (Level 9 NFQ) relevant to advanced nursing practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary nursing contact and coordinator for all patients referred to the Cardiology Access Unit.
  • Receive, review and process referrals from General Practitioners and other approved referral sources in accordance with established service protocols.
  • Conduct initial clinical assessment and triage of referrals, escalating concerns to the Consultant Cardiologist where required.
  • Ensure patients accepted into the service meet the agreed inclusion criteria and do not meet any exclusion criteria.
  • Coordinate patient appointments, investigations, reviews and follow-up plans to ensure timely access to care.
  • Provide ongoing patient monitoring and clinical support throughout the patient's pathway within the CAU.
  • Undertake comprehensive nursing assessments and maintain accurate clinical documentation.
  • Identify patients requiring escalation of care and facilitate urgent consultant review when necessary.
  • Support the development of patient-centred care plans and ensure continuity of care across the patient journey.

Essential Requirements:

  • Be registered as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
  • Have a minimum of 5 years post-registration clinical experience.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years recent experience in cardiology, coronary care, acute medicine, cardiac diagnostics, cardiac catheterisation laboratory, or related emergency specialty.
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development in cardiology nursing.
  • Possess excellent clinical assessment and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate competency in ECG interpretation and cardiology patient assessment.
  • Demonstrate competence in venepuncture and phlebotomy.

Applicants must:

  • Be registered as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
  • Meet all NMBI requirements for CANP/ANP registration and maintenance of registration.
  • Hold a Master’s degree (Level 9 NFQ) relevant to advanced nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate significant experience in cardiology nursing practice.
  • Possess advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrate experience managing complex cardiology presentations.
  • Have experience working autonomously within an agreed scope of practice.
