Assume responsibility for the 24-hour management, functions and quality of operations and clinical care in the Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Function Testing departments. Utilizes evidence based practice to ensure high quality care is provided for the patients of the BID Milton and their family/friends and supports.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under the general supervision of the Director and in conjunction with the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy, maintains the standards of practice and evaluates the care and practice rendered on an on-going basis.
- Organizes and directs functions and activities in the department. Interprets and implements established policies, procedures, regulations to personnel, patients, medical staff and the public. Utilizes personnel efficiently and assures cost-effective utilization of supplies and equipment.
- Provides direct clinical care as a respiratory therapist at BID Milton. Assesses patient condition based clinical experience, medical history, observations, examination, laboratory findings and the results of specific tests or respiratory function and other appropriate diagnostic procedures.
- Collaborates with the healthcare team for and makes specific recommendations to team to provide respiratory care support and interventions.
- Administers appropriate diagnostic tests and procedures to evaluate responses to therapy, including: arterial blood gas sampling and interpretation of the results; oxygen saturation by direct measurement and pulse oximetry; end-tidal carbon dioxide measurement; pulmonary functions / mechanics; spirometry; metabolic testing; and may assist the physician with special procedures such as bronchoscopy.
- In collaboration with the Director, assumes responsibility for overall personnel management within the department. This includes interviewing, selecting, disciplining, scheduling, assigning, supervising, evaluating performance and any other appropriate personnel actions. In collaboration with the Director, assists with developing/managing/planning of the annual budget.
- Meets routinely with the Director to discuss patient care, staff performance, staff concerns, equipment needs and other issues relative to the nursing unit.
- Develops and/or maintains unit based Quality Improvement programs.
- Monitors and assists in developing all appropriate competencies and skills.
- Coordinates, participates and evaluates the orientation of new staff members with the assistance of assigned preceptors.
- Participate as a member of nursing committees, in-services, and orientation programs as directed.
- Attends and/or participates in in-house or outside training programs to improve and augment skills and knowledge.
- Assists in administering highly specialized therapy with complex technological equipment and demonstrates a high degree of autonomy in performing immediate, accurate patient assessments and appropriate interventions within the scope of the Respiratory Therapist.
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED COMPONENTS:
- Employee maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
- Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.
- May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager or supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate Degree in Respiratory Care
- Current Massachusetts Respiratory Therapist License
- NBRC Certified
- AHA BLS certification required.
- Min of 2 years of experience in acute care environment
- Min 1 year experience with Pulmonary Function Testing
- Prior Leadership experience (preferred)
- Registered or registry eligible (preferred)
- AHA ACLS /PALS certification (preferred)
Pay Range:
$49.00 - $73.00
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
