Scheduled Weekly Hours:

40Ensure all practices and procedures in assigned sections meet requirements of licensing agencies. Assists the Director in ensuring the day-to-day operation of the Laboratory meets the service requirements of the hospital and accrediting agencies; CMS, IDA, CAP, CLIA, DHS. When designated, acts as a general supervisor or medical director designee, as appropriate

Job Requirements, Prerequisites and Essential Functions:

Job Specifications:

Education:

• Must have a BA/BS degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science, or other related science.

Experience:

• Minimum of completed pre-licensure training in California State Department Public Health accredited training program.

• Minimum of five years of general laboratory experience in an acute care hospital with a minimum of one year in a Specialist or Supervisory position preferred

License and Certifications:

• Lic Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS-L) required at hire.

• Integrative Agitation Management (IAMTAC) required within 30 days of hire.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred at hire.

Prerequisite Skills:

• Ability to work in teams in which all members are mutually accountable

• Ability to work collaboratively with team members, hospital staff, patients, and physicians

• Willingness and ability to be trained in more than one laboratory discipline

• Capable of organizing multiple tasks, using time management skills and attention to detail

• Basic computer knowledge with the ability to do data entry and retrieval

• Knowledge of blood/body fluid precautions

• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to read, speak, write, understand and follow English verbal and written instructions

• Demonstrated above average technical proficiency in assigned sections

• Ability to delegate and direct others in the performance of laboratory procedures

• Ability to be constructively critical of established practices and procedures

The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.

Duties And Responsibilities:

Essential (Not Modifiable)

• Responsible for ensuring duties of assigned shift or work area are completed, working with other staff to adjust workload as necessary
• Responsible for maintaining current knowledge of hospital polices and department policies and procedures. Responsible for performing job within the parameters of these policies and procedures: the following examples are not inclusive of all policies:
• Follow all appropriate Blood and Body Fluid Precautions
• Comply with laboratory quality control program
• Maintaining records
• Follow turnaround time policies
• Use computer for data entry and information retrieval
• Handle and process lab specimens
• Perform test procedures specific to assigned section
• Check test results for validity
• Responsible for maintenance, calibration, and assessing accuracy and reproducibility of instrumentation
• Keep equipment and work area clean and safe for use
• Participate in competency testing and training
• Participate in Proficiency Testing (CAP surveys)
• Keep adequate stock of supplies in work area
• Responsible for timely completion of any responsibility delegated to another staff member
• Responsibility for assuring completion of tasks and monitoring various aspects of assigned department to include:
• Operation of the assigned work area
• Instruction of others in performance of laboratory procedures
• Routine care and maintenance of equipment in assigned work area
• Monitoring of preventive maintenance of equipment
• Maintain staff schedules as assigned
• Development, implementation, and monitoring within assigned department of: Quality Control Programs, Proficiency Testing Program, Competency Testing Program
• Development, review, and revision of procedures for testing and instrumentation
• Responsible for recommending policy and operational changes
• Evaluate and recommend new equipment purchases
• Responsible for assuring all departmental work is maintained, procedures, studies, reports are completed timely and reviewed by Specialist, Director and Medical Director

The posted pay range complies with applicable law and reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. Individual pay is set by skills, experience, qualifications, and internal/market equity, consistent with MarinHealth’s compensation philosophy. Positions covered by collective bargaining agreements are governed by those agreements.
