minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs)

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is proud to be part of the provincial implementation of minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs), an initiative aimed at enhancing nursing practice and strengthening quality of care across the health system. mNPRs set the minimum number of nurses providing care to patients on a given unit. In British Columbia, mNPRs are developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) and health organizations. Within the context of a patient and family centred care model and in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of professional practice, code of ethics and patient care guidelines, the established vision and values of the organization, provides clinical education services including individual and group learning assessments, developing, implementing and evaluating clinical education programs and resources using specialized theory and knowledge of leukemia/bone marrow transplant (BMT) and adult learning principles. Consults, confers, and collaborates with Patient Services Manager, Patient Services Coordinator, and other Clinical Educators, Nursing as well as other members of the Leukemia/BMT Program team in promotion of continuous quality improvement, resolution of clinical education issues, and in coordinating activities required for progressive educational and clinical practice programs; takes corrective action with respect to individual and group learning needs. As a member of the Leukemia/BMT Program interdisciplinary team, participates in strategic planning and assists in achieving team goals and mission by identifying trends and opportunities, setting priorities, consulting and providing input/recommendations. Acts as a clinical resource for nurses and other health care providers in the organization and in the community via consultation, in-services and presentations using specialized knowledge of theory and skills in Leukemia/BMT/apheresis clinical practice to assist in adapting care plans to address issues for patients with Leukemia/BMT. Provides direct patient care in inpatient, day care and cell separator units. QUALIFICATIONS:Education & Experience Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).Three (3) years' recent, related nursing experience in leukemia/bone marrow transplant nursing including one (1) year of related teaching experience and/or group facilitation or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesBroad knowledge of nursing science theory, and practice within a patient/family centred care model.Broad knowledge of the standards of practice and guidelines for clinical practitioners established by the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNM)Broad knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care.Broad knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care.Demonstrated ability to provide acute, intensive and ambulatory care to patients with Leukemia/BMT.Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate, facilitate and lead.Demonstrated ability to develop educational programs and material.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, physicians, other health care staff and patients and their families, either one-on-one and in groups.Demonstrated ability to function as an effective team member, leader, and facilitator.Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work direction. Demonstrated ability to promote a creative learning environment.Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others.Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation.Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.Physical ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.Skill in the use of equipment and in techniques appropriate to treatment of patients with leukemia/BMT.Demonstrated ability to deal with and/or guide others in resolution of conflict issues.Demonstrated ability to function effectively and efficiently in emergency situations and guide others in order to deliver quality patient care.Demonstrated skill in managing multiline infusions and blood products/bone marrow infusions.Demonstrated skill in administering chemotherapy.Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.Broad knowledge of research methodology and processes.Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized patient care information system.The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
