Summary
The Clinical Coordinator for Surgical Services plays a key role in supporting the daily operational functions of the perioperative department. This position is responsible for coordinating clinical workflow, staff education, quality and compliance initiatives, and regulatory readiness to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care. The Clinical Coordinator serves as a clinical resource for perioperative staff, supports leadership initiatives, and collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes and operational performance.

Clinical Coordination:
- Supports day-to-day clinical operations of the surgery center to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality care.
- Serves as a clinical resource and role model for perioperative staff, promoting evidence-based practice and patient safety.
- Assists with coordination of surgical schedules, staffing assignments, and workflow optimization in collaboration with leadership.
- Ensures appropriate staffing levels and skill mix to meet patient care needs.
- Provides clinical support during procedures as needed to maintain safe operations.
- Assists with onboarding, orientation, and mentorship of new perioperative staff.
- Collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and ancillary departments to promote effective communication and teamwork.
- Assist with day-to-day clinical operations in the perioperative setting to ensure efficient, high-quality patient care.
- Provide leadership and clinical expertise during critical patient care situations.
- Develops and maintains monthly staff schedules in collaboration with leadership, ensuring adequate coverage and efficient resource allocation.
Education and Training:
- Develop, implement, and evaluate education programs for perioperative staff.
- Coordinates orientation and ongoing training for new hires.
- Provides bedside education, coaching, and support to promote clinical excellence.
- Organizes skills labs, in-services, and competency validations related to perioperative care.
- Ensures required staff certifications (ie. BLS) are current and appropriately tracked.
- Collaborates with leadership to identify educational needs and support professional development.
- Collaborate with the Education Department for joint training opportunities hospital-wide.
- Coordinates with physicians and the Executive Director of Surgical Services to plan, develop, and implement educational programs for emergency department staff, including orientation, competency assessments, and continuing education.
Quality & Compliance:
- Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives and assists with regulatory surveys (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS, and OHFLAC).
- Supports regulatory readiness and compliance with applicable accrediting and licensing bodies.
- Conducts chart audits and monitors documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Participate in root cause analyses, incident reviews, and process improvement initiatives.
- Tracks, analyzes, and reports perioperative quality metrics and outcomes assigned.
Leadership & Communication
- Serve as a role model for professionalism, clinical excellence, and teamwork.
- Foster strong communication between perioperative staff, physicians, and hospital leadership.
- Participates in departmental meetings, committees, and performance improvement initiatives as assigned.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Serves as a liaison between nursing staff, physicians, and ancillary departments.
- Supports operational needs during high-volume periods, staff shortages, or emergencies.
- Participates in departmental meetings and hospital-wide committees as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the surgery center.

Physical demands
- Continuously requires vision, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, sitting, and handling. Occasionally requires walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, bending, and crouching. Rarely requires climbing.
Travel required
- Minimal, if any, travel required.
Education and experience
Education:
- Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in perioperative nursing.
- Prior leadership or coordination experience preferred.
- Familiarity with trauma and stroke program requirements.
Certifications:
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS required.
- ACLS, PALS, and BLS instructor certifications (obtained within 6 months of hire).
