Job Description

The Schools of Social Work and Law seek a full-time clinical instructor for a joint appointment - Clinical Assistant Professor in Social Work and Mitigation Advocacy in the Criminal Justice System

The goals for this position are to:

  • prepare students for dynamic and innovative careers in mitigation advocacy
  • teach, supervise, and mentor (graduate and/or undergraduate) students completing internships in the Capital Punishment Clinic, and teach courses in mitigation, law and social work, and public safety
  • develop and implement courses and opportunities for collaboration among social work and law faculty as well as other faculty at across the University
  • strengthen interdisciplinary ties between the social work and law programs
  • engage in outreach to other schools throughout the University to expand interdisciplinary opportunities
  • Responsibilities -
  • Teaching:
    • One semester/year: teach or co-teach “Mitigation Matters,” an interdisciplinary course jointly offered in the schools of social work and law on mitigation advocacy in criminal cases
    • One semester/year: teach a social work course related to theoretical bases for, and best practices in, interdisciplinary criminal justice advocacy
    • One semester/year: teach a winter-term mitigation-skills course connected to the National Habeas Assistance and Training Mitigation Skills Conference
    • One semester/year:co-teach the Advanced Capital Punishment course, focusing on the development of mitigation in support of a non-death sentence resolution
    • Year-round: responsibilities working with MSSW/BSW placements in the UT Capital Punishment Clinic, including mentoring both social work and law students as they develop mitigation advocacy skills and strategies for their clients. The candidate will also engage in some direct practice with clients in capital cases.
  • Career advising for law and social work students seeking employment in interdisciplinary criminal justice advocacy.
  • The ideal candidate will be available to begin by August 15, 2020. The position is a 12-month full-time clinical faculty appointment. The position is non-tenure track, with an initial one-year appointment followed by three-year (potentially renewable) appointment.

Qualifications

  1. Master of Social Work and/or Juris Doctor degree
  2. Four or more years of professional experience in relevant work
  3. Experience supervising law students and/or junior mitigation staff/attorneys
  4. Teaching experience (preferred)

The salary range for this position will be $60,000 to 70,000 for twelve months, depending on experience.
