Job Description

The Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester invites applications for a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor in Mental Health Counseling. We are seeking a candidate who excels at teaching, both in-person and online, and clinical supervision, in ways that promote culturally sustaining practices. The term of employment will begin on July 1, 2027.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, which is part of the Department of Counseling and Human Development, is a 60-credit hour CACREP-accredited program. The program faculty seek to train ethical and competent professional counselors to diagnose and treat a variety of mental and emotional concerns and disorders. Our students can work with diverse clients, providing individual, couple, family, and group counseling in various settings. The program is designed to prepare graduates to work effectively as counselors offering services to people challenged by emotional, behavioral, and relationship issues. Well-grounded in counseling theory, research, and practice, our program prepares qualified, diversity-sensitive, license-eligible mental health counselors for practice.

The program faculty are productive, nationally and internationally recognized counselors, teachers, and scholars who are also committed to improving the quality of mental health counseling and the development of the counseling field. The department prepares scientific practitioners with diverse career and research interests and backgrounds. We have developed several online programs and courses at Warner as part of our commitment to enhancing learning opportunities for students and ensuring equitable access. The program, as well as the Warner School, is dedicated to producing and using research to enhance the effectiveness of mental health counseling processes and practices.

The Bridge program is an advanced certification pathway that allows Professional School Counselors to obtain LMHC licensure or Licensed Professional Counselors to obtain certification as a Professional School Counselor in New York State. This program offers hybrid and distance courses and is not CACREP-accredited.

The principal duties associated with this position are to:

• Teach the equivalent of six graduate-level counseling courses using rigorous pedagogy that adheres to CACREP standards.
• Lead program recruitment efforts and interview program applicants.
• Provide program and career advising for master’s and doctoral candidates.
• Seek external funding to support program development, student success, and scholarship.
• Provide service/leadership to the department, Warner School, and Counseling profession.
• Collaborate with departmental and University partners to help build and sustain a thriving Counseling Center, help establish clinical operations, supervision structures, and community partnerships to support the Center's long-term success.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates for this position will have qualifications and experiences that include:

• A Doctorate in Counselor Education & Supervision from a CACREP-accredited program with a specialization in REBT/CBT, Systems Theories, and/or Trauma-informed care (e.g., EMDR, TF-CBT, etc.). The doctoral degree must be earned before the position’s starting date.
• A master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from a CACREP-accredited program.
• A commitment to the preparation of strong mental health counselors, leaders, and scholars at both the master’s and doctoral levels.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize competency-driven pedagogy (e.g., experiential learning, case-based interventions, simulated learning environments, etc.) to facilitate students’ clinical and cultural competencies.

• Eligible to be licensed as an LMHC-D counselor with New York State, with a clear professional identity as a Professional Counselor.

• The ability to use technology tools flexibly and inventively to create powerful synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences, both in-person and online.
